Is it possible that ride height on the front is NOT set by rotating the upper shock body but instead by pulling the lower perch out of the vehicle's shock mount, setting the lower collars + spacer, then reseating in the shock mount?

Feal 441 front coilovers - ignore Feal's instructions - ride height is done by releasing lower perch via upper sway bar bolt, setting lower locking collars with/without 16mm spacer, jacking up front control arm to reseat lower perch and retightening upper sway bar bolt.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

New-to-me 2000 C2 cab has very nice Feal 441 coilovers which are about a year old. Rides great however front is about an inch too low. I cannot for the life of me budge the shock body to raise the front ride height on either side. I loosened the lower locking collars and have tried PB blaster plus collar wrench and a breaker bar on the upper perch collar, trying to rotate the shock body. They wont budge, and now both collar wrenches are rounded off. While I source new collar wrenches, any tips? Hard to believe theyre this locked after just a year. No corrosion, they look brand new. Is there something else Im supposed to be loosening to rotate the shock body?

POST 2Original post

You don’t rotate the shock body. You rotate the collars on the threaded part of the shock to raise the shock body in the wheel support. You also need to loosen the top bolt for the sway bar drop links. Go to the Feel web site ( www.Feel.com ) they should have some installation and adjustment instructions. Good luck with it. Mark

POST 3Original post

Look up your model on the Feel Website. There should be an installation video

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks - yes I'm trying to rotate the shock body using the perch mount locking nuts to raise it. I've followed the Feal instructions exactly, just like at 2:44 in their video. The idea of loosening the top pinch bolt is a good one. Didn't think of that, makes sense it could be binding it. I'll try it next.

POST 5Original post

My experience, It also needs to be in the air when you turn the collar on the shocks. The spring pressure will prevent them from turning unless you have a super light (IE small formula) car.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Loosening the top bolt for the sway bar drop link did allow the shock body to rotate - unfortunately, though, it's now rotating the whole assembly including the lower threaded perch. No way to raise height - the "bolt" of the shock is rotating along with the "nut" of the lower perch. I think they are just jammed, and it's going to require pulling them out to attempt to unseize or replace. Bummer as they are only a year old, PO put maybe 1000 miles on them. Sad thing is, because of the construction with a solid tube for the lower perch, I don't really see any way to unseize the coilovers on the bench, anything I do to apply torque is going to rip up and deform that tube. The rears, I could use a screwdriver in the lower mount, no option like that for fronts, it's just a threaded tube. Could drill a hole, don't really want to do that to a suspension component though. EDIT: I've been staring at this sheet of paper included with the PO's receipts and puzzling over why the spacer. Now I am wondering - do I have this all wrong? Is it possible that ride height on the front is NOT set by rotating the upper shock body but instead by pulling the lower perch out of the vehicle's shock mount, setting the lower collars + spacer, then reseating in the shock mount? Why else would my coilovers have this 16mm spacer, it doesn't do anything any other way. And - there are two lower locking collars, which are steel not aluminum. (They're getting chewed up but move freely.) Makes me think that's the intended purpose, and the reason I can't unseize the lower perch is because LOL it's all one piece. Feal doesn't mention this anywhere on their website on the instructions I have, which say to rotate using the upper perch collars to change ride height. EDIT 2: This video at 18:20 seems to confirm - release the upper sway bar link bolt, pull coilover free, adjust both lower locking collars, reseat coilover. You Tube Seems pretty obvious in retrospect, but I didn't take it apart to begin with so I didn't understand how it seated into the knuckle. I might email Feal to tell them they need to update the instructions or make them 996 specific. Appreciate the pointers. EDIT 3: Yup, that was it. Got my height set. Feal 441 front coilovers - ignore Feal's instructions - ride height is done by releasing lower perch via upper sway bar bolt, setting lower locking collars with/without 16mm spacer, jacking up front control arm to reseat lower perch and retightening upper sway bar bolt.
