Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I like the anti-dazzle rearview mirror option in my cars. This feature was an option when my 996 was built in 2000, but unfortunately it has the standard rearview mirror. Ive installed this type of mirror in other cars Ive owned so I figured why not in my 996. First I purchased a used Audi Gentex anti dazzle mirror 015621 with compass on eBay for $45. Luckily it came with the wiring harness. I hooked it up to 12v DC and both the compass and anti dazzle feature worked. This unit was taken from a 2005 Audi so the mounting button for the mirror looks the same as for a 2000 996. So far so good. As for power, the TSB from Porsche instructs you to tap into the fuse box running the wire up the A pillar, along the top of the windshield and then down to the rearview mirror. My biggest worry was breaking the windshield in the process of removing the rearview mirror. The process was pretty straightforward. With a pair of pliers gently turn the base of the mirror 90 degrees then the mirror pops off. I needed to trim the plastic tongue of the anti dazzle mirror 1/2 inch so it would sit flush with the headliner trim. There is no 12v switchable in the overhead light console for convertibles. Coupes likely can use the sunroof power. So I ran a wire from the footwell fuse panel to the mirror. The process of doing this wasnt too difficult and took 15 minutes. To summarize; 1) I purchased used off eBay an Audi Gentex anti dazzle mirror 015621 ($45) 2) I removed the old rearview mirror and replaced it with the Audi unit 3) I ran a wire from the footwell fuse box along the A pillar of the car to the rearview mirror. I tapped into the negative (ground) from the overhead light console. 4) I removed the seat heater fuse A6 (25a) and inserted a fuse box tap which allows you to retain the original fuse and create a separate fused power line. For the mirror I used 15a. Ive included photos of a fuse extension that moves the fuse tap to an area with more room. The extension lays flat and allows the fuse panel cover to properly seat.

POST 2Original post

I'm surprised there's no wiring there in case the car was originally ordered with the anti dazzle mirror.

If there is any pre wiring I couldn’t find it, my car is a convertible for the record. I completely removed the overhead light and looked around. Only the one pigtail which had a ground (brown), always on (black/red), and an always on 12v wire (brown/yellow) which was hot only when the car door was closed, (likely had to do with the interior dimming feature.) My research uncovered a TSB from Porsche which was written for the anti-dazzle retrofit. The technician was instructed to tap into the footwell fuse box and run a wire up the A pillar, along the top of the windshield and then down to the rearview mirror. In hindsight, this was the best way to power the mirror because it allowed this accessory to be fused. The process of fitting the wire along the A pillar was much easier than I thought it would be, With both the overhead center light console and the driver visor removed I was able to fish a wire through the upper windshield frame and hide it along the A pillar. Once I got to the level of fuse box I easily was able to route the wire to the fuse box. I’ve included some additional photos. Note the fuse box tap which converts an ignition switched 12v power to two different power sources, each capable of different fuse capacities. Brown =Ground Brown/Yellow=(Always on except when door open Black/Red=Always on Rear view of Audi anti dazzle mirror 015621 (From a 2005 Audi) Routing wire down A pillar Fuse tap(splitter on left with one fuse in. Fuse extension on right used to move the splitter out of the tight confines of the fuse box. .
