Suggestion · Original poster

Everyone is using 304 SS so the only difference on the main cans would be the thickness and quality of where they purchased the material .

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys I did a search and only found internal pics of the OEM mufflers . We all know they are a 3 chamber design and very quiet . But I can't find any internal pics of aftermarket mufflers . Maybe because of proprietary reasons ? Almost every aftermarket muffler is made of 304 SS . There are LOTS of posts about brands and sound clips . But what is the difference internally ? Seems many are clones of each other and assembled in China . If that is accurate what is the major difference between a pair of mufflers that are 800.00 vs a pair that are 1500.00 ? There seems to be 10-15 " brands " of aftermarket mufflers. If there isn't a major difference internally does your decision just come down to sound and price ? My ultimate goal for asking is I am considering the Fister mod vs buying aftermarket . My mufflers are not in great shape so SS is appealing to me . Curious what others have to say and has anyone cut open an aftermarket muffler ?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah I figured there wouldn't be many if any pics of the internals of aftermarket mufflers . Oh well it was worth asking .

POST 3Original post

There r some pics of the fabspeed maxflows somewhere here. They posted some comparison pics in a thread.

You asked a good question. Do you or anyone have an info on who actually produces the aftermarket exhaust components for each of the aftermarket exhaust sellers? It sounds as if many of these companies just private label other manufacturers components. It would be a helpful exercise.

POST 5Original post

Another thought, as you are studying exhaust design, consider designing a muffler cat system that will allow us to run the LN Cayman Oil cooler and transmission cooler where the mufflers currently reside. It would solve the final M96 issue of oil cooling. Add: it would make sense to help us contain costs by not having to replace the oem bumper. To put it another way, don't make it a center exhaust. If you do, we will have to buy a new bumper and have to get it painted which adds to overall cost. This in itself will mitigate sales potential. FWIW.

I did a search on the 996 forum for " Fabspeed internal muffler pics " and didn't see anything .

POST 7Original post

It's on a yutube video. May be on the fabspeed intake vs 3.8 thread as well.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Let me be perfectly clear , I am not contemplating designing an exhaust system or mufflers . I am just trying to get smarter on the actual internals of the aftermarket mufflers . Everyone is using 304 SS so the only difference on the main cans would be the thickness and quality of where they purchased the material . I " think " most are using perforated tubing and sound absorbing material vs baffles . But I could be 100% wrong . That's why internal pics would be helpful . But I also understand why a manufacturer would want to keep that info private .

Zbomb thanks for the link . So we have a sample size of one 😋 . But it's a start . And as guessed a combination of perforated tubing and sound absorbing material .

I went on YouTube and searched for " Fabspeed internal muffler pics " but all I saw was cut a ways of 993 and 996 OEM mufflers . I may be a dim bulb with my search skills 😁

POST 14Original post

Yep. There is no bigger fan of FVDs exhaust systems than me. If I didn't drive my car around town, I would have that in my car. Just in case someone is reading this that may manufacture exhaust systems, one with slightly more muffler would be preferable that doesnt take up muffler area space for an oil cooler nor goes to a center exhaust would be awesome. Just a suggestion to anyone listening looking for ideas.
