Since Im not a gambler, I decided to have the IMS Solution installed on my 99.

So, went by my Indy shop I used way back for my 930.

Id also be worried about replacing the 22 year old fuel injectors.

Ive been told on this forum with proper oil changes 70k on a clutch is reasonable.
Replace dual-row ims/clutch/flywheel at 31k miles?"

Maybe ask a mod to change your thread title to "Should I replace my dual-row IMS/clutch/flywheel at 31k miles?" to get more feedback.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So, went by my Indy shop I used way back for my 930. Prob spent 30-40k at this shop.
had a quick question about reverse switch. How hard and such to fix. Mentioned dropping trans brace? Then we got into a rattling driver window when window down. Immediately informed me its the regulator. So then Im like even if its a loose Im paying for a window regulator!
Forward we discuss the ol IMS bearing.
i said car is a 12/99 production date and should have dual row bearing and I also mentioned I was told was done by prior owner (has no stickers or info on such).
Hes you should just do it, and the clutch, flywheel and rms. 4800$.
Now I agree peace of mind maybe should. Car has 31k miles. No issues.
Only issue i have is DAMN IT do I spend this money 😂.
Wish I didnt stop bye and searched forums instead.
Northern Mass location. Kinda limited Indy shops for Porsche.
Sounds like he wants your business bad
look Im in when it breaks fix it state of mind unless your looking ride it hard and long
then get the work done and youll probably find find something else to worry you
mike
I thought you were going to buy the shop
Like a friend of mine didhe bought the shop but then
couldnt find anybody to work not a single person so he cancelled and gave the shop back to the original guy whos been there 40 years
Dual-row IMS/clutch/flywheel replacement seems very premature at 31k miles unless you have some reason to believe they are compromised. It's good to do them all at once, but typically it's better to wait until they are due for replacement. The dual-row IMS is very robust with a low failure rate. That said, if replacing it with low miles gives you piece of mind, it might be worth it, but it typically isn't needed. I've always heard RMS doesn't need to be done proactively -- it either leaks or it doesn't -- and it doesn't need to be touched if it isn't leaking. Hopefully someone who knows more about RMS than me will chime in to confirm or correct
It's unclear to me from your message whether you've committed to have this work done, or just have a quote that you are considering.
It might be a good idea to get more feedback from other to help make your decision and maybe to get feedback on price. My dual-row IMS and clutch was done at 67k miles, I plan to do do them when they hit 50k miles, which I think is conservative.
Your 31k mileage is low for replacement, but it is 22-ish years old at this point, but I don't know how much age is a factor.

I agree. Ive been told on this forum with proper oil changes 70k on a clutch is reasonable. I think doing at 50k is safe..can I be positive, nope but as others have advised Id be throwing money away.
your saying 70k on a clutch isnt doable? I disagree. If driven properly and not tracked? Ive been driving many cars for many years and dont abuse my clutchs but hey maybe Im wrong.
I agree with the "while I'm in there" philosophy, but unless the reverse switch requires major surgery, this is not a "while I'm in there" situation as none of the internal components are likely due for replacement. If the age of the dual-row IMS is an issue (I don't know personally), and the previous owner was not honest about having it done, then that would create a reason to "go in" -- but there doesn't seem to be an obvious reason currently.
Its the same dilemma every 996 owner with a dual row IMS bearing faces.
Spend money to fix a problem thats somewhat overhyped or continue to drive and take your chances
Since Im not a gambler, I decided to have the IMS Solution installed on my 99.
Its great to have something that permanently solves the problem.
Id also be worried about replacing the 22 year old fuel injectors.
You may want to consider a logical path of getting your ducks lined up first and then take action as needed.
1. First thing I would do is get every service record you can find on the car and see WHAT was done and WHEN: procedures, parts, service etc. Line the info up in a spreadsheet so you can see what you got and what you are missing. Feel free to share the info with us. You will get plenty of suggestions. This will help you to get a next steps gameplan together.
2. Second thing I would do is begin testing your oil to see what you have floating around in it. The testing will tell you quite a bit about your engine.
3. Third thing I would do is have your indy drop the sump cover and (1) see what bits are in there as well as (2) scope your bores to see if you have any bore scoring. If you do, you can take preventative steps to slow it. If you don't, then great, you can start spending money on the car.
4. The first three steps will help you to develop a proactive or reactive game plan to protecting your engine with the proper parts and procedures. Engine first, the shiny pretty stuff second.
5. Once you have the engine bullet proof, then you can start spending money on suspension, exhaust, aero, interior stuff etc.
Hope it helps. Welcome to the 996 club. Awesome car.
Bought mine with 23k miles, had the IMSB, clutch, RMS, and handful of other things done not long after. Dual row bearing so wasn't a concern of failure, but more-so that I knew if ever sold the car having an LN bearing in there would put a lot more buyers in the pot, because regardless of single or dual, it's always a question of if it's been done. The clutch was "while in there" because the cost wasn't that much extra, and end of the day, gives a sense of security to not only myself but the next potential owner.
People will give you different answers, end of the day it's your money and what you feel is right for your circumstances.
Some of the things you can do yourself too, the reverse switch doesn't require brace removal and is quite easy, below is a link.
