I'd expect a mass production chip for a massive number of cars and models like that one to stick with safe things like playing with the throttle curve to make it feel more responsive rather than change more engine operation parameters, but it's impossible to know what is in it.

Run sales as well since revo just announced theirs

Obviously there are plenty of other solid software providers that know what they are doing, and many may be running sales as well since REVO just announced theirs.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

ok here we go. fitted a stage 3 chip in my car went for a run . on the highway. only drove 10 miles. on my return journey l wound it up to 105 mph . for a few seconds maybe 10 .secs. l start to hear a wine scraping sound. some slow down tooke the exit ramp which has a bad ditch in it due to previous repairs and bumped over that at about 50 mph 😳 . then l slow down for lights and a serious rattle appears 🤔 so.l nurse it home . l plugged in my code reader and itsxsjows p0 022 + p0 012 . left n right bank are retarded.? plus mass volume air flow circuit low input. l.know lm.going to be looking at a hefty bill, but why did this happen . l had a very slight misfire on start up which cleared up shortly once reaching running temp . lm totally gutted l am in the process of upgrading and getting this car which only has 55 k onit back to oem. l have recently put the oem. airbox and new filter i put new shocks ie coilovers all round. l.know it's a long shot but . lve been told it could be timing chain tensioner breaking up or moving . ? does anyone have any ldeas ld be most grateful 🙏. sad 996 owner.
Gorgeous.
Both codes are position of camshaft in relation to crankshaft codes. One is for bank 1 and the other for bank 2.
Now...this is your third different post about chipping and your second on this topic. So I have 2 questions for you.
1. What does Thornton say?
2. Do you have a top notch Porsche shop that you can tow the car too?
Not knowing whats going on other than the two codes, I wouldn't start it again. Get an appointment with a top shop asap and tow it there. Stop messing around before you do more damage. And let us know what your shop finds.
I plugged a Stage 3 performance chip in my car, now it rattles. Why did this happen? Why did this happen? Ummmmmmmmm, let me guess...no really...let me guess - I plugged a Stage 3 performance chip in my car and now it rattles.
I've got to ask - what is your overall goal here? You keep posting threads on here. You are going back to OEM but plug a Stage 3 chip in? None of this makes any sense.
It would be nice if they banned people once in a while. I mean, for the most part this forum is great compared to others I read but every once in a while we get an idiot like this one.
who are you calling an idiot 🙄 l posted on here hoping to get some info and all.l get are insults. . none of yiu know anything yiur a bunch of know it alls . who know Jack. thanks for your concern really appreciated.

lts sat at a shop right now and the initial diagnosis is that is not good lm told it may need a complete rebuild. 🤔 .the knocking seems to be coming from the cylinders? if that's the case then l have located a donor engine. lm still waiting on the final outcome of damage . . l will put you all out of your misery soon and you can all.have a good laugh at my expense.
l.guess what lm trying to say is the 996 m96 engine is crap. and doomed to failure. even the boxster 986 .the 987 Carrera. are all doomed. to engine failure. lm bloody sure that the 8% that porsche quote for engine failures is way beyond 8% probably more like 80.% failure rate . one unhappy porsche. owner.

Sorry to hear the engine may be shot.
The 8% number represents the IMS failure pole on RL. It would be good to know what actually went wrong and caused it. Don't know how long you owned it, but there are a lot of 996s that show well which have been poorly serviced by previous owners. You can see that every day on BAT.
Bottom line is that every used car comes with various levels of baggage. Let's hope your replacement engine comes with an exceptional service record. It will increase your probability of enjoyable ownership.
Keep us posted.
No one is laughing at your expense.
Do keep us posted.
I got lucky with a used engine but I did my homework and thoroughly vetted it before purchase. And these are fantastic cars, engine and all!
Can't quite tell from your first post whether the engine is still making the rattling noise. The seemingly obvious first step would be to put the OEM chip back in and reassess the situation.
You are getting a bit of abuse because the 996 engine is already highly tuned for performance out of the factory, there aren't really any easy HP gains, and any chip manufacturer would need to be highly specialized in Porsche to come up with something that exceeds the performance and reliability of the factory tune. I've never heard of Thorton, but a quick look says they make chips for everything under the sun, and "Stage 3" promises 60hp and 5 mpg increase for every single car (even 60hp gains on 100hp cars). These are claims which are not even a little bit credible. You can also select V-12 on the 996 dropdown box without triggering an error, so there were some red flags. (although there is a rumor that the '99 models secretly came with V-12's
)
The above said, it's easy to get tempted by claims of easy and inexpensive chip gains.
You should definitely make an effort to reduce typos in your posts -- parts of the first post, for example, are crystal clear and other parts have massive typos. Some of your other posts are just quotes, that aren't even properly formatted. That laziness in sloppy posts is only go to raise the heat level in responses and make it difficult to understand what you are saying. If you can't be bothered to fix obvious typos and formatting issues, why would anybody want to help you? There is almost no moderation on RL, you kind of need to bring your "A" game on posting if you want to get good results.
Have you put to the OEM chip back in and what was the result?
Hey Bill,
I think you may be confusing me with someone else... I try ridiculously hard not to respond to posts such as these - and if I must, I usually just use an imoji...
No l have not put the old. chip back in it never had one l purchased one from a comp. l now know to be fraudulent. and a scam. follow up the engine is still rattling why would it go away. ??? . l will know more on state of play later today after a bore scope . 😴
Well if it does turn out to be scoring then it wasn't caused by this chip (probably did nothing,) this would be an issue stewing since you bought the car.
I'm not sure I follow you, but if you are saying there was no chip, and this was the first time you were driving it with the purchased chip, agree with the prior post that it seems more likely the engine already had issues (maybe exacerbated by the "spirited" run up to 105) rather than being caused by the chip. I'd expect a mass production chip for a massive number of cars and models like that one to stick with safe things like playing with the throttle curve to make it feel more responsive rather than change more engine operation parameters, but it's impossible to know what is in it.
Good luck. Hope you are able to find a manageable solution.
Is that even a thing? Genuinely curious. I've never heard of a car being "chipped" in that manner but I'm the first to admit I'm not all up to speed on current hot rodding trends.
Its done either by software that's plugged into the Ecu or a new ecu that is programmed.
But I did eat a ruffles potato chip yesterday. Didn't make me any faster.
The Thornton chips literally do nothing. I posted this in the OP's other thread on the exact same topic. There is no need to speculate about what they do.
https://www.performancechipguide.com...view-teardown/
So, OPs engine issues are unrelated to the chip. I wish him luck.
FYI, given the topic of this thread, for those of you looking for respected software. Just got an email this morning...
Revo is running a 25% off sale on their stage 1 ($699) and stage 2 ($799) software for the month of October.
Onlyrevo.com
They are one of the first 996 software providers with a track record. Obviously there are plenty of other solid software providers that know what they are doing, and many may be running sales as well since REVO just announced theirs.
But as this thread shows, if your engine isn't healthy, good or bad software won't save it.
Someday we will get a software thread together to test each.
All engines are doomed to failure.
They all start to wear out as soon as they're started.
The M9x might not last the longest lasting, because usually the ones that last the longest are over engineered and under powered.
The M9x might not be the most engineered, but it certainly is not underpowered!
