Been having problems with my MAF getting dirty, cleaned it yesterday morning and drove to work fine, on way home hit 4k rpm and engine cut out again and abs-psm warning lights came back on.
Leading evidence: 'Clean mass air flow sensor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Been having problems with my MAF getting dirty, cleaned it yesterday morning and drove to work fine, on way home hit 4k rpm and engine cut out again and abs-psm warning lights came back on. Cleaned MAF again and looking into airbox it is full of water. I 'm a new Porsche owner and am wondering if I am supposed to cover the intake when I wash the car and living in the NW worry about rain?
Carrera I don't know but I've washed my Turbo several times and it has been out in the rain a few times and upon engine start I hear the serpentine belt squealing a bit for a moment or two. I'm sure water is getting on the belt then.
Which makes what redridge suggests checking a very good suggestion.
On a related note, I bought a new 2001 Camaro Z28. Shortly after I bought it I was monitoring its vital signs with an Actron OBDII code reader/data viewer and I noticed the intake air temp was kind of high, higher than ambient by a goodly amount.
Raised the hood and looked around and spotted the intake air filter was not installed properly and the air box had a gap in it and was pulling in engine compartment air, hot air into the engine air intake.
New car. Dealer "prep". (I didn't pay for any dealer prep but this just highlights what a bogus charge it is for most brands of cars. Dealer prep consists of dealer rubbing his hands together in anticipation of pocketing the dealer prep fee for not doing anything other than rubbing his hands together.)
Check to make sure the engine air intake is assembled properly has no gaps, cracks or none of the seals are compromised.
If you can't do this or are not up to it, best to take the car somplace and have it done and sooner rather than later.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I have the Evo intake system.I can look through the vents on the engine cover and see directly into air box.I 'm not sure how the stock system works or looks but seems there is no way to keep water out unless I lift hood and put cover on the intake.
are there any plugged drains in the box?
the car should not have issues due to rain, they designed them to work in all weather - the vents on the rear deck allow water right in.. so therefore they allowocated a place to allow that water right out... check for that
I took the box out and cleaned it out, did not notice any drains in the box itself which I thought there ought to be. Should I drill some holes in the bottom of the box?
IMO if water can get into a box that the car is trying to draw air out of, and the water cant get out........
awe.... that sum biach would have a big azz hole in it right now
The bottom of the filter box is supposed to have holes in it for draining. If it's a stock factory box I have to figure you didn't raise the filter or something. There is a filter in there right? Another thing you can do is after a rain before driving the car try lifting the engine lid to get the water out of the lid. Mine has some sort of a drain problem I'm trying to resolve.
1. Do you have an air filter in there?
2. Is it a stock air box?
If you are going to drill holes, try to go like a stock box so that there isn't too much extra and you might benifit from cooler air when the spoiler goes up.
Anyway if you don't have a filter in there I can see how the car sucks water up.
I thought all of guys from Oregon know how to handle rainy weather. Are you from california?
Ask EVO what's up. Maybe they have a later model where they straightened out the water problem. I'd figure lowest points and where the water goes after acceleration G's and cornering G's would be a good spot for holes. I don't recal where and how many my stock box has but I'm sure I saw pictures of the stuff a few months back on here.
The EVO CAI version 1 on my car has 4 small holes in the bottom of the black plastic. Don't know if the holes are drilled as part of the manufacturing process, but I can't see much harm in drilling your own. With an aftermarket Gemballa wing, there's absolutely nothing stopping rain from dripping onto the air filter and into the opposite side snorkel. Of course I only try to drive it when's it's sunny.
