Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys anyone tell me the socket size I need for the timing chain tensioner under the AC unit? Its a 1999 C4 3.4 Has anyone removed this by just wiggling the socket down and attaching a long extension? I can get sockets down there using a universal joint, but I cant tell which is a good fit, not wanting to destroy the head I thought I would ask...

POST 2Original post

Its 32mm. Snap On makes a short socket for GM engines that works perfect for this, as it is less than 3/4" tall overall. Do yourself a favor, and remove the AC compressor. You'll waste more time fighting with it, than you'll save.. If you can remove it with universals and etc, you'll find the real bitch comes when trying to reinstall it, since you have to overcome tensioner pressure to catch the first thread. The tensioner is long, if you can unthread it, you won't have any fun trying to extract it from the cylinder head, past the AC compressor.

POST 3Original post

Removing the partially concealed bolt on the a/c is awkward. This may be a job to give to your Indie unless you have a great assortment of tools for such jobs and endless patience. DO NOT disconnect the a/c lines. you can just tie up the compressor out of the way with string to get the access you need. Some of theses jobs on the M96 must be very difficult for anyone with large hands.
