Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Another guy said no, since it doesn't show as a Durametric fault, it must be some software glitch and replacing the belt(s) won't help.

If not, replace buckle next - I think after '99 they changed the part so may also need wiring harness to adapt the new one in that case.

Since you are guessing about which one to replace, I would start with the one that gets by far the most use.

One guy told me that if I replace the seat belt (no idea which one, the message does not indicate), that this should clear it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When I start the car, a "fasten seat belt" message comes on the dash. I can clear that by pulling the computer lever back, but the red seat belt dash light stays on.
A Durametric scan shows nothing. One guy told me that if I replace the seat belt (no idea which one, the message does not indicate), that this should clear it.

Thanks!
I'd try contact cleaner in the buckle mechanism first - probaby a bad switch in there. If not, replace buckle next - I think after '99 they changed the part so may also need wiring harness to adapt the new one in that case. Look on pelican forum for details ...
When I bought my 996 I found the following receipt amongst the historical documentation.

I believe it relates to TSB#6924 which is actually listed for Boxsters because I haven't found a TSB for 996 related to this.

Hope this helps in some way.
Thanks, ion. Since I'm not getting an air-bag warning light, I wonder how much of that is necessary? (The wiring thing looks like a royal PITA) I'll look at the contacts first (if I can find them).
I don't get any of the codes mentioned in your link. No codes at all.
