I recently purchased this car with 68000 miles on it, my question is is there any way to know if it has the larger updated IMS bearing without removing the trans and inspecting the bearing.

I probably will go ahead and remove the engine to replace the IMS bearing for piece of mind anyway.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have learned from the AT designation on my eng number that I have a factory reman engine in my 1999 Carrera. I checked with Porsche Dealer today to see if the engine was replaced under factory warranty and the records show that it was not. I recently purchased this car with 68000 miles on it, my question is is there any way to know if it has the larger updated IMS bearing without removing the trans and inspecting the bearing. I probably will go ahead and remove the engine to replace the IMS bearing for piece of mind anyway. I did as some suggested pull apart the oil filter which I found to be free of any metal or debris. Any thoughts on replacing or not replacing the IMS bearing appreciated.

POST 3Original post

Do your research! There's lots of info on here (you need to search), some of it conflicting. In the end you have to make up your own mind which way is best for you. Do you know when your engine was replaced? The larger single row IMSB came out in post 2005 engines.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
