I use quality OEM parts for everything else, but the coolant tank was the one part where I couldnt find an alternative that had a good reputation.
Leading evidence: 'Use quality oem parts' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I currently have my engine out after getting the gearbox rebuilt, and am going through all the "while I'm in there" maintenance. One thing that keeps getting recommended in the coolant expansion tank. Unfortunately while the one for 01+ cars is available for ~$120 or so, the early model ones are all $500 or so. Anyone have a line on the early tank for a decent price, or know if the later model tank can work in a '99?
No issues with the tank as far as I'm aware, it just looks like a bitch to get to once the engine is in.
Thanks,
Chris
Thats the going rate unfortunately. The aftermarket tanks r garbage so u 4 better off leaving the old one in. The cost is why im not swapping mine out either.
Do it now with the Porsche tank and cap. I replaced mine with aftermarket and it was a bad idea, ended up doing it again. Spend the extra and be done with it.
I use quality OEM parts for everything else, but the coolant tank was the one part where I couldnt find an alternative that had a good reputation. When I had the engine out last year, I bit the bullet and spent nearly $600 on a Genuine Porsche plastic milk jug for my 99 C2.
I have read that the .2 tank will work. I have no proof, but if you want to try it and find it does not work, I'll buy it from you. I don't need it but a few of us would like this theory confirmed.
A couple months ago, I ordered by mistake TWO
Porsche 911 (1999 2000) Engine Coolant Recovery Tank OE Supplier 99610614756Y (from QE autoparts) for my 996 C2 year 1999. I installed one and may sell you the second one at $150.00 + shipping.
Feel free to private message me if interested.
Is there a reason for the price difference? Low production or something? I find Porsche prices fascinating, something you think will be relatively inexpensive is and then something you think will be expensive can sometimes be cheaper.
Beats me. The fuel injectors for a 996.1 are about 5 times the price of ones for 996.2, though there is a workaround.
For the tank, I bought an OEM tank made in Germany from Warehouse 33 (Rennlist sponsor) and have had no problems with it. It was much cheaper then Porsche brand. Maybe I just got lucky ,as most people here have had issues with third-party tanks.
I did see a fascinating thread where a guy cut a clip groove in one of the newer injectors to use in an early 996. Not even sure if that's necessary, the 1000cc injectors in my audi don't even have a clip to the fuel rail (injector dynamics).
Also curious if a modern bosch 23lb/hr injector would work.
I had never followed quality issues associated with aftermarket expansion tanks. Is the consensus that Behr is not the OEM manufacturer for Porsche on these? They've been making OEM cooling system parts for German cars for a LONG time. I would tend to trust their build quality, unless there are reported quality issues to the contrary.
Yes I've seen that ! Just bought the MK2 injectors, I've just ordered some deeper clips I think I can adapt to fit in the lower slot of the mk2 injector so you don't need to cut the groove, but that mod does work!
Isla , the clips need modification, a new groove needs to be cut in higher up on the deeper clip side so it can slide into the injector railallowing the clip to sit lower in the bottom groove, it has the little anti twist prongs on the front aswel which clip onto that little square block , I've noticed on the original mod the clip sits too high to engage with this so the injector could twist unless the prongs are bent out to a forty five degree angle so if this mod works it will be a better fix but I'm still waiting on the part to arrive, if the mod works It should be good but no guarantee yet!
I went through two "OEM" tanks from Pelican (both leaked in different locations) before giving up and buying a genuine Porsche tank- no problems since, and many happy miles. Hope you have better luck.
Bump as Im in a similar situation now. Can the early tanks be installed in a 99 with the engine in the car? Or does it require lowering the engine like the 02+ cars?
I have a '99 C2, and I needed to lower the engine. I tried everything I could to get the tank out without lowering, and just couldn't.
All you need is a floor jack, and the means to remove two nuts in order to lower the engine, don't let that stop you!
