Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Install 997 shifter' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean dash, and it's much more supportive and firm' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. It is the exact one Eric sells, I bought mine used so it was already in the "cage".

It's also why I use a track ball and not a mouse on my desktop computer.

I do wish I could swap the driver and passenger seats - I sat in the passenger seat while cleaning the dash, and it's much more supportive and firm!

I didn't go for a test drive yet, but I did clean and condition all the leather (there's a LOT of leather)!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, after it sat in my garage for.. a long time I installed it this morning.
B&M in a 997 shifter.
Just took a very short test drive, Notchy and the effort is much higher so I guess it will take some getting accustomed too but the throws are awesome!
So now you guys can stop abusing me.. we at least about the SSK
Off to work on some other car stuff and enjoy playing hooky from work today.
Here is the proof
Yes Tim, I really installed it, it's my car.
Just wait a month or so and go drive a 996 with a stock shifter. You'll be like, wow, I'm shifting a bus.
FWIW, on the track going from 2-3 is MUCH better with the SSK.

i think i hold the record. i've had a B&M SSK for about 1.5 years now. it seems i've had time to do other mods but never got around to the SSK install.
You should probably not have mentioned that
Mine was already installed in a 997 cage so the install was really quick and easy.
Just came back from a drive, I am sold. Feels great and the best part is the "rubbery" feeling is gone. That always annoyed me more than the long throws.
I wish I would have installed this months ago, I missed out.
Nice Marc!!
What do you all think of this:
I was gonna install one, but a guy at a very reputable Porsche trans rebuild shop (won't mention who it is, PM me if you want to know), advised that a SSK is not the best thing for the syncros. The reasoning is, the shorter throws are asking the trans to shift quicker, which in turn ask the syncros to match speeds quicker causing accelerated wear.
Thoughts? Don't want to hijack this thread, maybe I'll start another...
Sure just **** on my parade
Seriously, I have heard that before but there are just to many people running these and I would imagine as long are you drive correctly there should be no issue. all you are doing is reducing the throw, I don't think you are really shifting that much quicker unless you beat on it and that can easily be done with the stock setup.
Others more educated than I on this can weigh in.
Marc not to get off the topic,i would like to purchase the 40th anniversary script for my 2003 c2,is it available?any help would be apreciated p.s. also have the b+m ssk, amazing what a difference...thanks
Get ready to pay

If you get it you can lightly sand off the 40 jahre script if you do not want that.
It stays silver and looks great.
LOL!! Sorry Marc, I didn't realize it would come across like that!
I figure the same as you, when it comes down to it. I mean I can't see how shifting super quick with a stock shifter would be much different than installing an SSK, except that you wouldn't have to work so hard at it.
I might give it a shot. Although my second gear syncro is already shot, so I'm trying to baby it until I can find the $$$ to put in a rebuilt trans. Uggg.
That has been written in the PCA website tech section. However:
1. it seems inconsistent with Porsche selling a short-throw shifter kit for the car, and
2. speed of the shift is not necessarily related to the distance.
I have a long-term case of tendonitis in my right shoulder, and the short throw is simply easier for me to use than the standard throw. It's also why I use a track ball and not a mouse on my desktop computer.
Yep, number 1 makes sense.
But for number 2, if you shorten the lever arm, the only way the gears/syncros will be brought together at the same rate is if you shift in the same time as a stock shifter. That is, if it took 250ms to move the stock stick from 1st to 2nd, and you shift the SSK in the same time, sure, it's all the same. But, since the shift distance on the stick is now shorter, you should conceivably be able to now move the stick the shorter distance in a shorter amount of time (albeit physics says you'll need a greater force to do it), thus the gears come together quicker.
Is it enough to make a difference of wearing them out? I'm no expert so I don't know. But if Porsche had the SSKs as an option, I say give it a shot, it can't be that bad.
Best idea then: Make a track-ball shifter!!
OK I am drunk now and believe Marc - earlier I was sure he was lying
Hick
awe man - I love you
Hick
That thing looks freeking awesome

you are the best

Just want to add, last night went for a "spirited" drive. The ssk is the BEST mod I have done to my 996.
Perhaps short of suspension and chipping/bigger Turbo a 951 one of the best mods I have done to any of my P-cars.
I give it the thumbs up, Syncros be damned!
Marc, good for you! That's ^ why I was giving you so much grief about getting it installed, because I knew you would really like it! Well, that and the fact that I enjoy giving the "good guys" a hard time once in a while!
I installed my 997 shifter today. Removing the center console was easy following the instructions - thanks Toyota!?
I didn't go for a test drive yet, but I did clean and condition all the leather (there's a LOT of leather)! So the next spirited drive will be in soft, comfy supple leather.
I do wish I could swap the driver and passenger seats - I sat in the passenger seat while cleaning the dash, and it's much more supportive and firm! Is there an easy way to swap the padding maybe?
marc one more thing,i want the 911 40 jahre script for the rear lid,i wonder if they have it? and yea its 142.00 for the interior piece, welcome to the world of porsche!
Wow, the dollar is really tanking, I think I paid 110 a few moths ago
You should be able to get the decklid badge from sunset/suncoast I bet.
I have been tempted to do just the plain "911" on the rear lid but for now I am debadged
Hey Marc, can you clarify what exact SSK kit you used?
I see our friend Eric at bumperplugs has the B&M kit on sale at $199.

Just wondering as you said yours was already installed in a 997 cage, so I'm not clear on that.
