I'd have to come up with the best tape and peal method for a clean line.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First, apologies for not bringing up a problem with my car's IMSB. I have always liked the look of the rear lid/spoilers in black which are found in the early 911 and now in the 991s. Has anyone done this? Any pictures? Cheers

POST 2Original post

You could try the plastidip paint route first. If you didn't like it easily fixable.

POST 3Original post

That's definitely a retro look for sure. Not sure that I like it.

POST 4Original post

I think it works with white - especially with the black bumperettes... Not sure if it would do much for darker colors...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Plastidip sounds interesting. Will it withstand the heat from the engine? The reason I'm considering the change is because the paint in the grill area has begun to turn yellow. So I either have it repainted original or go with the black. Found this 2015 picture:

POST 6Original post

I think it would be a good look on a white car. Plastidip holds up to abuse on wheels so that area shouldnt be too bad

POST 7Original post

I think it will give it a sportier look. Some people may not like it. However, it will highlight that it is a rear engine car. I will also say that it will probably work better with non-metallic bright colors (e.g. white, yellow, red)

POST 8Original post

I think plasti dip should be fine with the heat. If not, it will be fully reversible just in case you don't like it or if it start peeling.

POST 9Original post

Plasti-dip will be fine on the engine cover. I painted the exhaust tips on my C5 with it.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Completed the Plastidip. The job looks good from a distance but once you get close you notice the imperfections along the edge. There are no distinct lines to follow so I had to make up my own while masking. Regarding the aesthetics, it is a change but not necessarily an improvement. I'll live with it for a few days and if it remains appealing I'll have some one do it professionally with paint. Thanks for the Plastidip recommendation. Cheers.

POST 12Original post

Looks good! It's tough to see (from the photo's) what your talking about with the edges, but I'll take your word for it... Overall "A"

POST 18Original post

I Likeee! If you don't think it looks good Enuff up close, just get a Professional to do it! At least you know it looks Good black!

POST 19Original post

What? Mine came black?? (of course, my car is black..)

POST 21Original post

Looks great, especially against the white and black bumperettes. Red and yellow cars would look awesome too I think. Really livens up the rear. You may want to check your motor mounts, one tail pipe looks a little lower. My 99 had stretched ones. Cheap and easy fix.

POST 26Original post

I love that people are rattle-canning their 911's. Another couple of weeks, we'll be seeing AEM stickers and fake purge valves. Maybe some purple underglow. I'm only 80% joking. Some kid could tear UP car shows with an aero 996 with a full load of rice upgrades.

POST 28Original post

It somehow works. But something needs to be done with these yellow tail lights.

POST 32Original post

Love it. Tape off the round part of the headights and spray then remainder with white plastidip. That would make it look like a 911

I did that with my car. Overall it looks pretty good, though I did a poor job masking so the lines are off. I'm peeling and respraying it with a better masking tape. The picture gives you the idea though. image-794243356.jpg

POST 35Original post

Huge improvement. From the bottom of the lights can you add some plastidip to "round the headlights so they look less oval and more round? Anyway, ten times better than stock.

POST 36Original post

I've got a seal grey 996 c4s cab. Am thinking of having it wrapped in red. Also thinking of having the spoiler and mirrors wrapped in pseudo carbon fibre... Always wanted it to be red, and wrapping is reversible...

Cinellipro - is that you I "ran in to" on Kendall drive tonight?? I love the look, really makes it look retro in a good way. Liked it so much I did a rennlist search as soon as I got home! Seriously considering on my white 997, figure can't go wrong since it's totally reversible. JC

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was me on Kendall. The plastidip has held up perfectly. I like the look and plan on making it permanent. Once it starts peeling or fading I'm going to have it painted professionally. I do think this modification works best aesthetically with whites, reds and yellows. Especially with the black carrera script and bumperets. Hey, if Magnus Walker can modify 911s then why can't we!

POST 40Original post

I joined the bandwagon! Didn't bother taping off the bottom of the spoiler, just dipped the whole thing because I'm lazy Also did the wheels today because mine look like they've touched every curb in the continental US of A.

POST 41Original post

Quotes source post: 11878647

Whadya mean 'look like'? It is a 911.....

POST 42 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ryan... It Looks Great! I did not paint (plastidip) the entire grille because I thought it would have been overkill. Instead it looks fluid with the design of your car. Great job!

POST 43Original post

Thanks! I was really just too lazy to try and mask off the back "lip" of the wing like you did Either way I think it looks great, and so far the BMW crowd (with whom I hang) seems to think it looks pretty good.

POST 44 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think we need to see this done on red and yellow 996s.

POST 45Original post

I was bored and had an hour to kill. Going with the OP theme of retro I did a quick tape off to see what a early wing with rubberized section might look like. I peeled it off afterwards. I'd have to come up with the best tape and peal method for a clean line. Kinda looked cool, cant beat the way this stuff just peels off, so cool. Will likely do the center section and see if I like that against the silver, I do have stain black wheels so I like the way the black breaks it up a bit.
