Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car has the exact same noise at start up after it sits awhile as the car in this video: 996 startup noise - YouTube Is it lifters? Chain? Fresh Mobil 1 0w-40 is in it... I'm probably going to change to 15w-50 pretty soon. 99' 6 spd 32k miles. Thanks. -Mag

POST 2Original post

Go to a thicker oil.........5-40 and dare I say try out some DT-40.......now I did it I posted a suggestion to oil use.

POST 3Original post

If I'm focused on the right sound, what I'm hearing may be the starter gear remaining engaged longer than it should.

POST 4Original post

You mean the noise @0:03s and the rattle @0:04s? I don't hear anything obvious after that. Checked your heat shields?

+1, I heard the same @0:03s.

POST 7Original post

Same car, same noise, how do I know it? It's my car. I have had that noise about 3y now, and I think that it's coming from the DMFW. Rebuilded my engine 60k km's ago, and after that this noise was still there. (rod bearing broke, so that was the reason rebuild/refreshing)

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry but what is DMFW? Thanks guys.

Dual Mass Flywheel

POST 10Original post

Normal. My car engines make a similar noise when I leave then engine off a long time. The last time I heard this was from the Boxster's engine when I left it off for over 3 weeks when I was away. If you want switch to 5w-50. This is not a typo for 15w-50!

POST 11Original post

If I am focused on the right sound. Both films they are using the acceleration pedal. A no no on start up.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
