When I picked up the car I looked under it for oil leaks and the pan was dead clean, not a single spot of oil I could see.

Suggestion

Order the new oil pan because that one is (1) ugly all scuffed up; (2) possibly cracked; (3) you'll have to pull it off anyway to repair the sealant so you might as well pony up for a shiny new oil pan.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Picked up a 99 c2 last week with 69k miles, and noticed it drops about a inch by inch spot of oil overnight. Here is where it drops from circled in red Does the rms/is typically drop oil more forward on the engine? The oil appears to be coming directly from above the red circle.

POST 2Original post

looks to me like a bad oil pan gasket or the pans been twerked from the it hitting something, looks damaged near leak

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wonder if I can pull it and re seal it or if I need to replace the lower piece. When I picked up the car I looked under it for oil leaks and the pan was dead clean, not a single spot of oil I could see. I supposed it could have been the PO cleaning it very well, but it had no oil traces. On the 1200 mile drive home from Los angeles to Washington state I bottomed out on the roads two or three... Maybe more times. I noticed the leak when I got back home. So it's possible I disrupted the seal between the oil pan and caused the leak.

POST 4Original post

Bottomed out???? I find that hard to believe. What kind of roads did you drive along???? Drop the pan. Clean and inspect it. Install another gasket.

POST 5Original post

Looks like some scuffing on the bottom plate. You need to drop the sump, look for badness, change the seal, and consider a skid plate.

POST 6Original post

There's no gasket/ seal there. Yep, looks like it was bottomed out, hopefully it didn't hurt the block.

POST 7Original post

Do yourself a favor - replace that oil pan! I can't believe you could "bottom out" the suspension that much. That being said - new oil pan ($160), Locktite 5900 sealant (there is no gasket) and a new LN Engineering drain plug. And quit driving like a maniac!

I installed this plate last month and thought I saw a gasket... and now I see that it's just a sealing material. Ah, learning has taken place. Thank you.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 12142885

Well, and doing it a few times without a skid plate... Hopefully nothing is too damaged and it goes together with new sealant. Wouldn't be a lot of fun if that doesn't work.

POST 10Original post

As a first step I'd put a torque wrench on the pan bolts, could be something a simple as a loose bolt.

POST 11Original post

To me this is not one of those "let's wait and see what happens". Order the new oil pan because that one is (1) ugly all scuffed up; (2) possibly cracked; (3) you'll have to pull it off anyway to repair the sealant so you might as well pony up for a shiny new oil pan. If you find it is cracked you won't be laid up waiting for a new one. It will be a job worthy of the car, the cost is minimal but the peace of mind will be worth it in the long run. Plus you will get a nice oil change and you will get to inspect the oil pan. Also consider getting the LN Engineering spin on oil filter adapter as well along with the drain plug. Welcome to Porsche ownership!

POST 12Original post

^^ ( PS- DB, I spent a few years in Ormond...left a trail of women and an ex-wife there... may your paths never cross . lol) Agreed. Every time my wife pulls out of the garage in the 996 I watch the floor appearing as she rolls back...in solemn and prayerful thoughts...hoping for no fluids on the floor. I liken it to looking for a few approach lights, or some runways markings when I'm at the bottom of a low instrument approach...nearly quivering with anticipation at what I may or may not see. I'm no KK, but I do look over the underside as much as the topside, so I'd encourage the OP to address this oil thing smartly. .02
