Even on the front straight at Barber, I didn't have the pills to reach v-max: I think I made it up to 165mph-ish in the Turbo S, but would have to double check the vids to be sure.

ayyye, 130s before the bus stop is a nice test of handling thru that section!!.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mostly very short sprints up to speed then back to normal.
Almost 135mph indicated on the back straight at Road America. Id love to drive to 174, published top speed for a 996 C2 cab, but wouldnt be able to find a place to do that.
116 (by accident) on a recent trip to the coast. I was crushing at about 90 and stopped paying attention to the speedo for a bit. If you let the car do what it likes on flat tarmac, 100+ is a 996 “comfort zone”.
Around 165mph
On an empty German Autobahn without a speed limit
Doubt if I will ever do that again on a public road. It is way too fast. If anything unexpected happens on the road outside your view it is almost too late to react.
At the local track max 130mph, the straight is too short
how would you describe driving the 991 vs 996 ? having only driven a 996 i'm curious how different the later 991 feels, handles, sounds compared to the older 996. thanks in advance.
I wanted to make it fair for the other 2 cars that were trying to run against me. A modified focus St and Golf R gave it a try, wasnt even close. To be fair, I have 480tq with an LS2
125 mph (kinda wimpy, I admit - but opportunities for even that are rare).
I agree that:
996 really seems to like speeds above, say, 95 mph
It likes the twisty roads (where 70 is about the upper limit of safe) even more
Cuda is a way better source for the answer to that question, but I can tell you for fact that they are VERY different cars. I don't own a 991, but spent a weekend at Porsche High Performance Driving School (forget what they call it now) driving the Carrera GTS and Turbo S on the track (about 8 hours of track time in each), so i probably have a better idea of the true driving characteristic than most owners, lol (no slight to any of them that actually drive them)!
-I honestly think the 991 feels even bigger than it is. That's not to say it feels like a big car, but comparing dimensions of the 996 to the 991 (which are significant but not astronomical), the 991 feels like it's bigger still.
-Power is immediate and endless. Even on the front straight at Barber, I didn't have the pills to reach v-max: I think I made it up to 165mph-ish in the Turbo S, but would have to double check the vids to be sure. It's intoxicating for sure, but there is something to be said for wringing out the 3.6 in the 996 in order to be fast. There's no doubt I would get WAY more tix in a 991 if i had one in my garage.
-The PDK is hands down better than the manual (I cringe as i type that while wearing my "Save The Manuals" T-shirt), and if it were to see 50/50 street/track time, there's no doubt I'd buy a PDK. The rev matching on the manuals is fun, but it's so easy to do the same w/o that feature on the 996, it's just neat to experience the first time and nothing more.
-Where I'm able to reach the limits of tires/suspension in a C2 996 when a steal it away from my buddy that likes owning cars more than driving them (honestly have not done so yet in my C4S), I never felt like I was reaching the limits of the 991, even when we experienced rain on the track. Perhaps the thought of putting a $150k car into the wall at speed kept me humble, but even on long sweepers at triple digits did I never lost traction... ok maybe a bit, but was super predictable and communicated in an almost relaxed way.
-I'd be hesitant to compare the two like many might compare the 996 to an air-cooled 911, but the 996 does feel more raw and engaging if for no other reason than it's lack of technology and capabilities comparatively speaking of course. I guess the best way to put it -- the 991 is just more 911 in every metric: size, speed, handling and smiles per miles.
When I look back at my 3.2 Carrera from 1988, compared to my 99 996, the 0-60 times are still in the 5-second range. The base 996 really isnt a fast car by todays standards.
127 mph in a heartbeat shift 3, 4, 5 up a long sweeping interstate ramp where I could see behind me...not saying where. The 996 may not be the fastest 0-60, but boy does it keep pulling right on up there. Backed off immediately because too afraid of getting pegged by a trooper at that speed. My wife looked at me and I said we just did 127 mph. She was reading her Kindle and didn't even notice. The car was solid and I can see where +100 mph all day would not phase one.
I saw my speedometer read 116, but didn't look back down after that. I had the pedal on the floor on the back straight at mid-ohio. If I had to guess I was hitting 120ish all day long and would have gone faster if I had more nerve going into turn 4. I kept braking early because it was terrifying coming up on a 90 degree corner at those speeds and it was my first time on a track. That's the fastest I've gone in my 996. In my RX-7 I took it up to 134 once and it was still pulling pretty hard.
Only 105. But it was in a snow storm...
Topped out a 350Z (at the limiter) at 155. But this was on the Nissan test track in AZ.
Over 100 in my rally Talon (also on snow and ice) at the Sno*Drift stage rally. That gets real exciting with trees lining both sides of the road...
Mid 100's at a short-track DE event 2 weeks back. I will definitely hit higher when I visit COTA in September, though. You don't really even feel like you're hustling all that much. 03 C4S here.
I've had my 996 a month and hit 118 on an empty stretch of the freeway last week. I looked up this thread to see where people are able to drive these cars at top speed. I haven't found the answer yet. I can't imagine driving 170 on any open public road around here. Maybe I can find a long deserted stretch of road out in the desert somewhere.
When I bought it I told myself I'd keep it under 100 for a month or so until I got used to it. I failed. (mostly because the streets are empty due to the COVID lockdowns)
Low 130s back straight of Watkins Glen, then hard brake to go through the Bus Stop
But even more exciting in my mind, different day, learning to drive a 996 100+ in the rain, wiper going full speed
(full disclosure, it took a lot of laps with great instructor to get me there)
125 on a straight stretch of four lane non divided highway that is almost always empty. It is on the last stretch on the way home on a twisty backroad route that I drive regularly. The car feels incredibly stable at that speed and I would love to push it higher but the fear of deer (zillions where I live, including in town), getting the car impounded and a mandatory court date make me wimp out.
I will take inspiration from the posts here and try to keep it to the floor for a bit longer!! 2001 C4
Last Sunday morning, 154 Mph car felt good and stable, then I looked on my left mirror and here comes a friend on a McLaren 720s he passed me like I was standing still, he hit close to 180.
I usually don't go past 125 or so, even at the track, I don't need to go that fast, but do cruise at a 100 quite frequently, last Sunday was a rarity for me.
Just over 100 on 495 (LIE) late at night "out East" (still super dangerous)... The car feels great at that speed, and it get's there very quickly but the thought of tickets/losing my license is just too powerful. I'll be doing a couple DE's this year - we'll see what I can get her up to on the track.
Quality radar detector gives some peace of mind. Wide open stretches of road with clear visibility also helps. Mostly very short sprints up to speed then back to normal.
There are also herds of deer on Eastern LI - scary even doing 60mph on my favorite back-road twisties...Generally speaking they hear me coming and freeze or take off into the woods. I've had a few jump out on my when I'm in my other car though - you just never know...
Got over 120 on the staight on the Lighting track of NJMP. I probably could have gone faster but the few laps i got that fast i couldnt figure out where to brake so the over the top right hander didnt scare the crap out of me. Kept it around 115 to be safe in my head.
I went to NJMP (both tracks) 2 weeks after buying my 996 4s for my 1st ever HPDE. My instructor wouldnt let me go too fast, really diminished the experience vs what I expected. Maybe thats why i drive so fast off the track.....its all his fault!
Total elapsed time traveling from Boynton Beach FL to just south of Albany, NY was 15 hours 22 minutes. I figured I had to hit 120-125 at one time or another on I95.
Back in 1983 I had an opportunity to get a 1976 930 Turbo opened up a bit on the Autobahn in Berlin. Hit 265 kph (165 mph) and decided that was enough. She definitely had more in her.
165 on an abandoned airstrip. I was in
Mexico
I also scared the **** out of myself when my car gave me the death wobbles. On the roads, I got into a cruise with my buddies 1992 IROC, his dads Camaro, and my dad's R8 and we hit 120 on Ocean Parkway on Christmas.
About 110 twice in short spurts during a short 60 mile "mental health" loop this morning
That's about as fast as I'll drive any of my cars give or take 5-10 mph.
ayyye, 130s before the bus stop is a nice test of handling thru that section!!. Especially downshifting and that hope that 4th gear is selected to avoid the money shift. The carousel following mustve also been sweet , too... !!
i reached abt 130 on VIR back straight, thats a leap of faith into the little left hand dip before the downshift too ...
funny, i dont drive more than 90 or so ever on the highway ... i guess the track does it for me.
68 mph on a local in-town hi way four lane. Speed limit is 45. This was the first drive after getting my car back from F6I and I thought I was doing the speed limit...NOPE! Have never had the car out of town, but did put it in 5th and 6th gears just to make sure they were actually there! If life ever returns to normal I will run it out on some runs as I now trust the engine will not hand grenade.
That area is the point on the track for
money shifts,
I have been there when engines grenaded.
I am still in instructed group (yellow), my instructor two years ago, lost his brake lining on right front pad (Cayman "S"), coming into the the bus stop, had to take the straight away safety area, but did get it slowed enough to make it around carousel to flat area of Nascar course. The lining just delaminated from the backer plate, very expensive brake pads with only one HPDE on them. Image inserted for folks who have never been to WGI.
I love the carousel (turn 5). Just learning how to let the car rotate a little (street tires).
I had considered going to VIR last year, but it was a long three day event and a long drive (8.5 hours), I don't own a trailer, so I decided against it. I have watched a lot of video from there, it looks like you can really
haul the mail
on that straight.
There is a short freeway section here that is sort of a “road to nowhere” locally. I have hit a little over 100 on that a couple of times, indicated. Given the speedometer error, call it 95+. Sadly that is as fast as I have driven my 911. Took European delivery of my BMW 335i and after it was broken in hit the speed limiter for several miles (130 mph - all season tires) on the autobahn.
On different visits to Germany I have driving at top speed of the car for many miles on the autobahn between Erfurt and Berlin some years ago. Unfortunately I was in an Astra 1.4 and a BMW 318i so the top speed was probably only around 120 or so. Still fun.
Looking forward to doing a DE one day even though my cabrio is hardly a track car. A couple of guys in the PCA local club tell me that a 996 will hit 130 at Mid-Ohio without difficulty.

Just shy of 140 at Roebling Road Raceway and same at Sebring International Raceway. Accomplished 143 on a mexico road shortly after i purchased it. Now that i track the car i stay of the mexico roads.
I've got a 335i too. I've never driven it fast enough to see if there is a speed limiter in mine. May try to test that sometime in the future when the "right" opportunity arises.
Was always hitting the speed limiters on my Prius (had 2 of them) at about 103 and my Chevy Bolt at about 93, which I found really annoying. LOL!

Did not realize that a Prius would go over 100 - Good to know as I have had a number of these as rental cars. Surprised the Bolt will go to 93 - how fast does the battery go down at that speed? Cool car - friend of mine has one and really likes it.
I ordered my 335i with 18 wheels and all season tires, so that combo comes with H rated tires (or todays equivalent) and a 130 mph speed limiter. If yours was ordered with summer tires and/or the 19 wheels I think there is no speed limiter. May have required the track package, not sure about that.

Many of the cars I've rented in Germany hit about 155 before the limiter kicks in. That was with the BMW 520D & 320D both turbo diesels. The Mercedes C200 and many other cars I rented were slower.
A friend of mine worked for BMW in Munich and now works for Audi in Ingolstadt. He said they generally have a 155 limit on the Eurospec cars. Obviously not sports cars, but most other cars.
My wife drives a 535XI and I don't think we have ever been much over 100, but damn does it get there quickly.
150 indicated. Was in 6th at 83-85, cruising home from work at around 2:30-3pm. I rounded a bend, no traffic, 1.5 mile strait, new Michelin AS3+ out back. I figured I'd pick up the pace. Steady pressure on the right pedal, nothing crazy. I looked down as I passed through 147, looked again at 150, and needed to ease off for a bend, into a short strait where troopers hang out, regularly.
I stopped driving the Bolt on the freeway because I couldn't keep my foot of of the accelerator and drained the battery too quickly. Used it just a a local street car and only put 8k miles on it after the 3yr lease expired in Feb. LOL!
My 335i came w/18" wheels w/the Sport pkg. So, it probably is speed limited but I don't recall EVER driving over 120 in any car. I usually cut it off by 110-115 but, if I come across the right conditions, I might just try to see if it's actually limited or not.
