Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I realize this question has been asked many times and most often the answer is 23 or 25 ft lb for the motor mount top bolts. There are several motor mount DIY's stating 25 ft lb. My car (99 C2) has M8 grade 8.8 bolts for which I believe 17 ft lb would be more appropriate. I have seen one reference to the workshop manual stating 17 ft lb. I changed my mounts yesterday and initially torqued to 25 ft lb which seemed excessive. I've since reverted to 17 ft lb. Hope no permanent thread damage was done. The threads are in a steel nut welded to the sheet metal. Worst case a longer bolt and nut could be used to secure the mounts. Thoughts? Is everyone just using 23 or 25 ft lb on these bolts?

POST 2Original post

I cant imgine u did any damage. I would be more concered if u were torquing into aluminum.

POST 3Original post

I swear my service manual stated 23 ftlbs. That's the value I used.

POST 4Original post

I would say anything tight enough to hold them in place. They don't really do much anyway, the weight of the motor is pulling down on the motor mounts. They aren't going to go anyplace.

POST 5Original post

Youre really just securing the nuts from vibrating loose - if youre worried about that at 17 ft lbs just throw a spot of blue loctite on it and be done...👍

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all for your responses. 17 ft lb it is then. I will check on them each time the air box comes out.

POST 7Original post

I just replaced the rear mounts the other week. I reinstalled mine based on feel from when I took them off as they took little effort to do so. I did use blue loctite on them when I reinserted them.
