Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2004 Targa. A month ago my front trunk was intermittently giving me the problem of not releasing when I pushed my key fob and/or trunk release button. I fixed it by replacing the actuator. Yesterday a new problem occurred. When I press the door unlock button on my key fob, the trunk pops open. The actual trunk unlock on the key fob works properly as does the button on the door sill of the car. Additionally (and evening more disconcerting) the trunk is unlocking on its own. It did it 3 times during my commute home last night and again today within 1/4 of leaving my house (I just left it ajar all the way to work). It occurs every time I drive now. Its never done this before. The only trauma that has occurred is that I left the car out in fairly hard rain while I was at work over the weekend and I dont know if maybe some water got in and shorted out the system. I dont think its the key fob as I just had it replaced at the dealership within the last 6 months. Any thoughts on what could be happening? Thanks in advance for any help you folks can provide.

POST 2Original post

You might have a short in the key fob. Open it up and look for a broken solder joint. Not uncommon with these old fobs. Oops, I just read the second part. Check under your carpets for moisture and if wet get it (carpets) out ASAP to dry! The immobilizer is under the drivers seat and will be very expensive to fix if wet.

Thank you! It turns out that it was an issue with the trunk actuator. Ive replaced it (again) and everything is working perfect. I am concerned about moisture in the car and I believe this problem was probably a result of that. Luckily I live in San Diego and usually keep my car garages, but Ill be looking to weather proof it piece by piece in the next few months.

^^ Make sure you keep the roof drains clean - they can clog up very easily, and when they do rainwater backs up into the cabin. There's a company that makes a waterproof enclosure for the immobilizer... do a search, someone posted a thread fairly recently. Good luck

POST 5Original post

I too have a Targa and echo the statement about keeping the drains clean. In Porsche's infinite wisdom, the immobilizer sits at the lowest part of the car in what is effectively a shallow pan in which water can collect. For others that may stumble across this thread in the future: I want to pass on that at one point I had a baffling issue with my front trunk not opening while the rest of the car would. The car would make these strange squelching sounds when locked (not the proper horn honks). It sounded like a dying electronic device. Come to find out the dealer that improperly connected the immobilizer in so it was somehow only making partial contact. Re-plugging it in correctly magically made it all work. It was very odd. The car ran/drove just fine and would lock/unlock without issues (save for the front trunk of course!).

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
