So I was checking the oil level with the electronic level, and I notice that the oil pressure gauge fluctuates with the engine off, what's up with that, I just got through driving about 15 minutes earlier and when I turned the key the engine compartment fan went on, not sure if those details mean anything.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I was checking the oil level with the electronic level, and I notice that the oil pressure gauge fluctuates with the engine off, what's up with that, I just got through driving about 15 minutes earlier and when I turned the key the engine compartment fan went on, not sure if those details mean anything. Is this normal? Need a new oil pressure sending unit? When the engine is running it all points to normal readings with slight fluctuation here and there.

POST 2Original post

Most likely a bad oil pressure sensor. A healthy one will read 0 when the engine is off and a not so good one will read something non-zero but it still reads the pressure correctly when engine is on.

POST 3Original post

My oil pressure gauge was doing that. Sometimes it would read 1 with the engine off. After a while it started to fail periodically while driving (Oil Failure messages and the gauge would plunge to zero). The oil level was fine. I ended up replacing the oil pressure sending unit and that corrected everything. It's an $80 part and a fairly easy DIY project.
