Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used a low profile harbor freight trans jack, at its lowest point, it was still pretty high - I used floor jacks to get the trans off of it while under the car and onto a wheel dolly to get it removed from under the car...kind of a pain in the *** but it worked.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

I currently use liftbars which create a lot of fear each time I use them.

I am looking for pointers on replacing my AOS while I am doing a clutch/RMS/IMS on my 992.2 C2 this weekend.

Removing the gearbox is pretty easy, The AOS is a job where the tricks to doing it efficiently are hugely important and not knowing them, or having the right tools on hand to implement really can cost time and test your patience.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For those of you who have DIYd both clutch and AOS, which is more difficult?
Ive replaced the AOS. If the clutch is more difficult then I may have to rethink DIY.
Removing the gearbox is pretty easy, The AOS is a job where the tricks to doing it efficiently are hugely important and not knowing them, or having the right tools on hand to implement really can cost time and test your patience. If I had to do it again, I would be much more efficient at the cost of having to do it the first time where I really didn't know the best way to do what I was trying to do.
The trans on the other hand, everything is visible and there's nothing that I would say is particularly difficult to get to or see. There is the fact that the thing is heavy - so consequence exists for not treating the removal process with care.
Get the car high enough that you can actually get the trans out from underneath the car it once its out. I used a low profile harbor freight trans jack, at its lowest point, it was still pretty high - I used floor jacks to get the trans off of it while under the car and onto a wheel dolly to get it removed from under the car...kind of a pain in the *** but it worked. I was missing not having a 2 post lift a lot more doing the trans than the AOS.
Removing the trans was about 2 hrs out and 2 hrs in my first time doing it. I think I could get the clutch job done in a day without too much stress on my back if I had to.
Once the trans is out - the clutch is unbolt / bolt in so I would have no worries about that.
Thank you zbomb. Sounds like the clutch can be pretty straightforward with a lift.
I think its time for a two post low profile. I currently use liftbars which create a lot of fear each time I use them.
I hate working on jack stands with the bottom of the car 6 inches from my face...until I've spent a couple minutes under it - then I forget about it and settle back in to as comfortable as I can be in that situation.
I can't wait until I stop spending money on car parts and can afford a lift... but wait, If I've already installed all the parts by the time I get a lift, what will I use the lift for...
I was prepared to fight getting the trans to seat, guess I got lucky.
On my back I put both feet on the trans and wiggled and pushed and felt it slide in, was super satisfying. I did put the lightest coating of grease on the beginning of the splines on the input shaft, that may have helped a bit.
On the AOS side of things...
I did a smoke test the other day and discovered my AOS had a torn bellows. I was prepared for a nightmare. Surprisingly easy to replace. No more vacuum leaks. The $169 Autool smoke machine is worth its weight in gold.
I suspect I tore the bellows during aos install last year. The original AOS bellows was shredded too. Curious, does the UAOS require a bellows? The bellows seems to be a very weak spot of the OEM system.
The UAOS for 996.1 does use the bellows, the 996.2 doesn't. The "bellows" is a weak item but isn't dangerous to the engine when fails. Will cause a CEL for lean condition (vacuum leak) but will not cause Hydrolock from oil, and easy and inexpensive to replace.
My 2 cents. I got my 996, at that time having done only basic maintenance. Oil, brakes, simple parts (alternator, belts) on my other cars.
First month I did the IMS bearing, clutch, and some "while I'm in there" stuff.
18months later (this winter) I did the UAOS along with new fuel injectors.
I put them at about the same in difficulty, but at opposite ends of my wrenching spectrum.
IMS/clutch has heavy transmission, big bolts, relatively easy to get to but requires manhandling the transmission, and careful alignment, torque specs, etc. on bearing, flywheel bolts etc. But nothing finicky.
AOS was entirely about finesse and working with fingertips, blind, elbow deep in the engine. Alot of small parts to bag and tag, but overall nothing too hard if I was methodical. (Ok, last manifold bolt, but there are great posts on getting that.)
Good luck.
Did you still have to remove the intake manifold to replace the AOS? I am looking for pointers on replacing my AOS while I am doing a clutch/RMS/IMS on my 992.2 C2 this weekend.
