Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Posted this in the Canada regional forum, but thought I'd also ask here. Recently picked up a new-to-me '99 996 in ocean blue metallic, and took it to a highly-recommended detailing shop in Toronto to get a two-step paint correction and ceramic coating. There were initially some high spots on the car, and the shop took it back right away to repolish and reapply the ceramic coating on those panels. Just got the car back again today, and everything looks great except this one spot. Pictures attached. It seems like it could be in the shape of a polisher, so my best guess is that when the rear area was polished/retouched, this is where it stopped (instead of going over the whole area). Is this as good as I can get, or should I ask the shop to have another go? I hate to be a difficult customer, but also wanting to get my money's worth ($950 for the paint correction and another $950 for the ceramic coating). Thought I'd get the group's opinion. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Just my opinion but for 1900 bucks that spot you outlined is not acceptable . Maybe send those pics to the shop and see what they say ?

POST 3Original post

Absolutely not. If I did that for any one of my customers, theyd lose their ****. With that said, certain coatings will flash differently based on temp or humidity. Id take it back and let them try to fix it.

POST 5Original post

Thats unacceptable. Its hard to tell from the photos . but did they burn through the clear coat?

POST 6Original post

Take it back and show them as it looks like they left the coating on too long in that area.. If they don't fix it I would leave bad reviews and shout it to the roof tops. Then take it to a better shop and explain what happened..

POST 7Original post

Looks like it was just polished in that area or the area on the left is coated/giant high spot or they just forgot to recoat that part?. I am gonna guess polishing because if that was a high spot on the left it would be gigantic. I've left my fair share of high spots, we all try to catch them before they go out the door but coatings are weird in the lighting and angles that high shots will show up in. At this point, I get so paranoid by it that I do so many wipe-downs. I do an initial wipe down, then wipe with a clean towel. Then I move on to the next panel and do the same, then back to the previous panel for another wipe-down. Then after an hour, I follow it up with a topper and another wipe-down.

So far 3M is the coating that left me wondering if I wiped enough. It would flash as youd expect but I guess with temp/humidity it would blot or cloud after 12hrs in some areas.

I've been using Opti-Coat Pro for the last few years. Pro and Paint Guard are super easy to work with, the Pro+ can be finicky but overall I find the first two pretty easy to deal with.

POST 11Original post

Your car is cleaner than my computer screen Eh, After cleaning my screen, yes I'd take it back. I have a detailer 2 doors down from my shop. I tested him by giving him my truck to buff and wax. I'm glad I didn't give him a Porsche first, but since I wanted to remain friendly I figured it was a good test, hard to find a good one that pays attention to detail /pun. There's a great name for the next fly by night detailer "attention to detail." --Aaron

POST 12Original post

I hope that's not issues with the clear coat. If it is coating, Take it to someone else to fix. I mean how do you miss that after you took it back to fix the other spots.

POST 13Original post

No way a coating or lack thereof would cause that kind of discrepancy on a similarly-prepped surface. Sorry to say but it looks like an oops with the rotary. Was there a scratch there before?

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 18937445

Many coatings darken the paint and spot fixes leave shading differences like that seen above, the reason that fixing high spots usually involves re-polishing and re-coating an entire panel. Looks like they tried a spot fix in that area and that is the result. A simple repolishing and re-coating of the entire panel will be an appropriate remedy.

POST 15Original post

I had the same thing happen when I got mine ceramic coated. Took it back, they just simply missed a spot. Buffed, Reapplied, and buffed it up and it's perfect. I don't think it should be that big of a deal for them to fix. It happens....

I agree with you on this I've definitely seen a coating alter the paint a bit, obviously in a good way.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the help everyone. Posted an update to the original thread on the Canada regional forum, and thought I should post it here too in case anyone else runs into a similar problem. Took the car back to the shop, and it's been fixed after repolishing the entire panel. Was worried that it could've been some issues with the paint underneath, but glad that wasn't the case.
