Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Once I saw the carnage, I just filled back up with cheap oil and parked it.
Leading evidence: 'Fill back up' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ims bearing' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If bore scoring is eliminated, drop the transmission and check the IMS bearing.

Not sure if I want to fix/replace, LS swap, or just bag the whole thing.

Unsuccessful attempt
I can tell you that before I knew better, after IMS failure, a shop "flushed" the engine and then installed a new IMSB. This did not help anything.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys. Trying to decide what to do. 10yr ownership of 99 996 c2. Routine oil change turned up thisThe magnetic drain plug looked like a metal Christmas tree
Zero noises, great oil pressure. Once I saw the carnage, I just filled back up with cheap oil and parked it.
115k-ish milesRecent trans rebuild by G-Boxold worn out OEM GT3 coiloversGT3 console deleteGT3 rear seat delete.
Not sure if I want to fix/replace, LS swap, or just bag the whole thing. So interested in thoughts on its value as it sits.
Might as well get a thorough bore scoping so you know exactly what the cylinders look like. My guess is under $10k as a soon to be roller but others may have a better understanding of the FMV as it sits. Best of luck.
GT3 console delete is $500 (!) new. MIGHT be worth parting and selling on eBay considering how much they're worth versus price you'd get for the roller.
It is a cool looking car, and palladio metallic is a sweet color. I wouldn't throw in the towel just yet. Have it scoped and check the IMSB then reassess.
Very nice spec. I've seen the ~$10K dollar figure a lot too for rollers but with that build sheet you could do better.
If I were a betting person I'd say that was an IMS bearing disintegrating. If so, and the bores look good, you could have a lot of miles of enjoyment left for a relatively affordable outlay. If you do go that route be sure to have the engine thoroughly flushed to be sure of getting all the bits. The IMS shaft is hollow so it's not as straightforward as some may think.
OP - Sorry to read about your troubles! Don’t give up yet. There are a couple of very good Porsche shops in the SeaTac area. PM groovzilla. He’s in Seattle and has some contacts. If you want to keep it a flat six, a used 3.4 could work. You could have it gone through while it’s on the pallet, before you put it up. It’s all about your love for that particular chassis right now. Good luck!
The steel in the IMS bearing would stick to the magnets and would disintegrate in chunks as shown. In any case, all that debris is distributed throughout the engine, which, I think, would make reuse a problem. I think to have bore scoring generate that much debris, you would have heard it.
Did it smoke or tap?
Do the free stuff for now; drain the oil, remove sump pan, and check out the underside of all 6 cylinder bores. Rotate the crank so you can clearly see the piston travel of each cylinder. That will confirm or eliminate the bore score. If bore scoring is eliminated, drop the transmission and check the IMS bearing. Both are doable on jack stands.
Yep ,, IMHO there is no "flushing" to clean it up for a new IMS bearing,
All that scrap in the oiling system with all the many parts in the engine that have tight tolerances..
FWIW. I got many quotes and looked at rebuilding myself when my 3.6 broke,
I came out with a total price for parts alone at just under 15K
(To be fair once I go this route ,,,I'm not short sheeting anything.)
Full rebuilds from shops on my short list that I had some trust of,, between 19K and 30K..
All my inquiries were with LN 3.8 Nickies, Hartech is great but at the time I was dealing with
trying to ship an engine internationally and covid.. Was just too complicated. It's way better now.
I can tell you that before I knew better, after IMS failure, a shop "flushed" the engine and then installed a new IMSB. This did not help anything. If it fails, make sure you do it right, split the block, and get everything out. Anything short of that is probably no bueno and you'll be back in the shop in no time...
Overall, there's so much love for the 996 right now - I would consider rebuilding, if you have the budget. If not, then sell as a roller, but make sure you thoroughly investigate prior to getting rid of it.
Just fix it. For the money, what else could you buy that you would like as much? I know there are a few tempting options but if you enjoy driving a 911, no other make comes close at the price point.
Yep, I hear that. Thing is, Ive had my fun with itand in this current season of life, Im more desiring something smooth/cruisey vs firm/sporty.
Not sure I have enough posts yet to list in the classifieds, but it will probably be there soon. Im open if someone wants to make me an offer.
