At that time I'd definitely replace the serpentine belt...and would check the idle pulley's.

Can anyone comment on the validity of LN engineering's comment stating that all engines replaced after 2006 will have the new "non-serviceable" IMS?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

And so far I'm loving it! The car has high mileage (245,000km) but doesn't present that way at all. Interior is a 9/10, exterior 8/10. Forgive me for the long post, I'm going to try to get this all out of the way in one go! The engine was replaced in 2009 due to cylinder scoring. Can anyone comment on the validity of LN engineering's comment stating that all engines replaced after 2006 will have the new "non-serviceable" IMS? I picked it up cheap as it needs some mechanical attention. The previous owner took it to a very reputable local shop to get a breakdown of what it needed and opted not to go for it and sell the car instead. This list was essentially to make the car "perfect" as he was very meticulous. The question now is, what is actually worth addressing in this list? The shifter is a little sticky and doesn't always return to the center position. Is there a simple fix for this? The suspension feels tight, so I likely won't address anything there yet. The transmission will grind when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd quickly. Is this at all common? Is there any chance simply flushing the transmission fluid would fix it? Or potentially a synchro? Theres a good amount of part cost on the quote for transmission related components which I feel may be excessive Neither electric mirror works, could this be the switch? Fuse B5 appears to be all good On top of all the items on the list, I'll obviously be doing the standard Oil, plugs, filters. Any recommendations for spark plugs, air filter and oil filter? One of the key fob remotes does not unlock the door. The battery seems to be good as the light on it blinks. Is there a pairing procedure for this? Are there any other "while you're in there" items that are worth addressing? Now that you've made it this far, here's a picture of the cars!

POST 2Original post

Nice car, welcome to the 996 club. Grinding gears is not normal on any shift... 3 to 2 downshift shouldnt have any issues if things are working properly. Mine shifts smoothly, even with a Numeric short shift kit. GT3 center console delete is a great and relatively inexpensive interior mod that gives it a more classic 911 look. Suspension is another good thing to do, but you said you dont want to tackle that yet. Im on Feal coilovers and Im really happy with them. Lots of stuff you can do to a 996.

POST 3Original post

Suncoast Porsche offers a complete VIN decode service for $10 that will show the serial of the originally equipped engine + trans. There is a stamping on the engine itself that can be viewed from underneath. I believe in 2009 the replacement engines had the non serviceable IMS.

POST 4Original post

Welcome! For mileage you're not kidding, that exterior looks fantastic. Grinding definitely not common, can't say if it's a synchro issue without laying eyes on them. Plugs, air filter, and oil change are never a bad idea, take a sample and send it off to Blackstone and cut the oil filter open to see if it's collecting any large particles.

POST 5Original post

Congrats! I'm loving the speed yellow 💛 Ketchup & mustard

POST 6Original post

Ill have a real good shifting trans 4 sale soon if u need a replacement.

POST 7Original post

If both mirror motors are not working id look at the mirror control switch first. Even broken you should hear the motor moving

POST 8Original post

Congrats & beautiful 996. I've also got a 964/996 combo. Perfect pair to have. Very different cars with similar DNA makes it fun to experience the evolution. The 964 might be worth 3x more but it's definitely not 3x the car or experience. That's how you know the 996 is undervalued

POST 10Original post

Beautiful car, I have its twin. You can try the second gear detent as its pretty inexpensive before jumping into the gearbox. Heres mine:

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the comments everyone. Chatted with my friend at Porsche and he looked up the service records and confirmed the engine was replace in 2009. Can anyone comment on the validity of LN engineering's comment stating that all engines replaced after 2006 will have the new "non-serviceable" IMS? I could have worded my grinding question a little better. I meant is it a common problem that needs to be repaired, but it sounds like no. I imagine its due to the amount of miles on the transmission...

POST 12Original post

2nd gear detent will help pop-out, but I don't think it's going to help grinding. AOS, I'd suggest UAOS instead of OEM. -Good idea to replace it. I'd do coolant tank and engine mounts while doing the UAOS. At that time I'd definitely replace the serpentine belt...and would check the idle pulley's. All of the above are DIY jobs. Leave the RMS until you tackle the transmission. Consider grabbing De Jeeper's tranny. Speed Yellow is beautiful!
