Suggestion

I think the best legal answer would be to put him up front and install the airbag disable bar and have it activated (you can get a fake buckle clip from a company in the UK so you can use your existing seat) so that you can disable the airbag when he is up front.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've had my 996 for about a year now and my boys (3 & 5) always have a blast in it. Lately, I've noticed that with the booster seat, my 5 year old's head is above the top of the backrest of the back seat. And with so many distracted drivers these days, I keep worrying about getting rear ended. I've searched to see if there are any rear seat accessory headrests and nothing. As I highly value your opinions I have a couple of questions: 1) Has anyone seen any type of back seat back rest modifications for a head rest? P-car or other. 2) What is the frame of the back rest made of? Anyone know? 3) If I was to modify the back rest by a upholstery shop would that pose any problems for the convertible top? Maybe I'm better off either putting him in the front or get rid of the booster and take a risk of getting a ticket. Do you think the officer would be compassionate if I show him the booster in the frunk but explain why I don't use it?

POST 2Original post

My son was four when I got my C2, and I didn't use a booster with him in the back seat. The seat belt kept him plenty secure and I never had an issue with the police. Thought about a booster in the front, but have never been a big fan of having young kids in the front seat with an air bag.

POST 3Original post

I think the best legal answer would be to put him up front and install the airbag disable bar and have it activated (you can get a fake buckle clip from a company in the UK so you can use your existing seat) so that you can disable the airbag when he is up front. I wouldn't try modifying the existing seat back as you could risk other unintended results and I'm sure doing it in a manner that meets the applicable laws will not be cheap in the least. To your other suggestion, you are the parent and have to make the decisions you are comfortable with regarding your child's safety. I think the only real safety issue there is where the chest belt will hit him, but I have a much different view of many of these "safety" laws than many people. I think the risk of a cop pulling you over specifically for that violation is slim, though if you get pulled over for something else he may tack on the extra ticket. Your explanation (reasonable in my opinion given that our 996 has been rear ended 3 times in it's life) swaying them really depends on the cop and how his day/week/life has been going.

Good to know. My concern exactly. Good suggestion but it seems a hassle. I found this article on Pelican: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...activation.htm I wish I had an idea what the interior material is. Probably a thin steel plate or perforated plate. I'd rather have the belt hit him than his head snapping back and be hit by the bar that's right behind him.

POST 5Original post

I got mine from Suncoast and followed the Pelican DIY. The only hassle is that you have to go to the dealer (or someone with a PIWIS/PST) to have it coded since the Durametric can't do it. The install is removing the seat rail end caps, removing the front seat bolts, inserting the bar, install the new (longer) bolts, and plug the wire in. Nice and simple and my son LOVES riding in the 911 since he gets to sit up front and his seat is high enough to see out the front and side windows. He is still in a full seat though. It's more about where it hits him. You definitely don't want it hitting his neck. But you could either have it behind him or don't they make devices that will help bring the strap lower?

POST 6Original post

you also can get a booster which has a back rest and head rest attached. This is what I use for my 6 year old.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12349100

You had to take off the original back rest though, right? This may be the best option. I know if I bring the older one to the front, there will be endless fights and complaints from the younger one in the back; who by the way knows almost all exotic car names. He is so into cars! ... and he is only 3. I can already see him being a track junky.

POST 8Original post

Recaro Vivo was a good option for rear seat fitment and extended head rest concerns. They don't make this anymore but you can still find some used. I have these but use them in different cars. I just use Cosco bottom boosters in the 996 now until my boys get high enough where their heads are over the rear seats. At 5yo, your boy must be on the tall side.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12349616

I also have Cosco bottom boosters. I think I'm leaning more and more toward full back booster. I'll probably remove the backrest though. This way my wife can sit up front. About being tall: Yes, he is 95th percentile in height for his age. BTW: Thanks for the photo! Say, is that a 997?

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 12349656

This was just some random photo I found but yes it does appear to be a 997. Interior wise they are very close.

POST 11Original post

I have a his and hers high back booster from Walmart. It actually looks just like the recaro booster seat posted above and supposedly won awards for being one of the safest seat. I dont think its the most comfortable seat but it raises both kids up so that the lap belt is across their chests. It also has the head rest to protect their heads from flopping around in a rear collision. I find that my kids fight in my TT as they are too close to each other. In my Touareg they can hardly reach one another.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 12349744

Pics or link? I also have some Cosco high back seats for a spare car. Their comfort is practically non existent but I put some memory foam mattress topper under the seat cover and feels much better for the kiddies.

POST 13Original post

I have the same Recaro Vivo and it fits my small sized 6year old perfectly in the back. Just as important the whole seat fits in the car perfectly. My average sized 8year old fits in back without a booster very well, just has no legroom when he sits behind me so I make him cross his legs and say "ohm". What I REALLY like about the Vivo is the SIDE head restraint/cushion, they are huge.

POST 14Original post

I knew I had a pic. Recaro Vivo in back of '02 C2. Very pleased with it.

POST 15Original post

Now my daughter who is 5 and a bit of a runt uses a bubblebum seat. It's perfect for the back seats since it's inflatable and fits perfectly. Not sure it's what you desire, but I bet others are interested. http://www.bubblebum.co/us/booster-seat/

POST 17Original post

Both my three and five year old fit in these seats.,the five year old doesn't really need a seat, but I'm not sure where the lap belt will be, otherwise she fits perfectly in the seat.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A lot of good info guys. Thank you!

Thanks, I'll have to checkout this option since they quit making the Vivo's. I have 5 seats already but 3 kids and 3 cars, so the math doesn't add up.
