Suggestion
However, from what I have read it is highly unlikely that under normal engine operation, clean filter, proper oil weight, that the safety bypass valve opens allowing for unfiltered oil to reach the engine components.
Leading evidence: 'Run dt-40 instead of antifreeze' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean filter, proper oil weight' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Replace intervals, i couldn't go through $250 in oil filters

Suggestion
The best advice - change oil/filter regularly, use a high quality oil of proper viscosity (oh here comes an argument!) and filter combination, and get the LN oil filter adapter and use a quality spin-on oil filter with advanced filtration.
Use high viscosity oil at low temperature, another safety feature

It can also open if using a high viscosity oil at low temperature, another safety feature.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I think that's what he meant - if he should use the stock filter housing as a way to ensure the engine gets adequate oil at startup when the oil is most viscous...suggesting that the bypass is a feature, not a bug.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Bored at work waiting for the Cavs game and scrolling through posts. There was a comment about not using the spin on adapter because on cold starts oil bypasses the filter.
So if oil is supposed to be bypassing the filter on cold starts (especially in cold weather) is the engine not getting enough oil at first - especially on cold days - leading to problems? Should I switch back to the factory filter for the winter?
Or am I overthinking this?
I think you may be overthinking. Besides, the bore scoring you're GUARANTEED to suffer from operating your 996 in the winter is certain to take your car out before oiling issues to the spin-on adapter.
But what if the bore scoring is because of the spin on adapter not providing enough oil on cold starts? What if it's a plot to get more engines to fail since the IMS issue has been resolved.
And to prevent bore scoring I decided this winter I will not start my car if it below -10 degrees F.
I think that's what he meant - if he should use the stock filter housing as a way to ensure the engine gets adequate oil at startup when the oil is most viscous...suggesting that the bypass is a feature, not a bug.
Maybe LN or Flat6 will opine...
Been there...done that. This has been discussed and Jake has weighed in. Stock oil filter canister has a bypass that allows, under certain circumstances, for unfiltered oil to circulate through the engine. The LN Oil Filter adapter with a spin on oil filter does not have a bypass so the engine is always getting filtered oil. Good diagram of the oil circuit included:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...s-bearing.html
You are right the LN spin on adapter does not have a bypass. However the cartridge filter you use with it does. I cut mine open (Mann filter) and I saw it.
That is true. Most oil filters incorporate a safety bypass valve in the event the filter becomes so clogged that a 12-15 psi pressure differential across the filter media exists. It can also open if using a high viscosity oil at low temperature, another safety feature. However, from what I have read it is highly unlikely that under normal engine operation, clean filter, proper oil weight, that the safety bypass valve opens allowing for unfiltered oil to reach the engine components. Like the oil filter manufacturers say, any oil flow under extreme circumstances is better than no oil flow. There are filters available with no safety bypass valve, however not recommended for the various extremes automobiles are subject to on an everyday basis. The best advice - change oil/filter regularly, use a high quality oil of proper viscosity (oh here comes an argument!) and filter combination, and get the LN oil filter adapter and use a quality spin-on oil filter with advanced filtration. Any other combination is asking for trouble. My bet would be that with that advice under normal circumstances the oil filter bypass safety valve never opens. Well, that's my 2 cents....sorry did not mean to turn this into a dreaded "oil thread" OMG
Note to Self: Stop posting oil stuff...refer all oil/filter debates to Jake!
Guys, just for my clarification:
1. On the stock filter housing, the bypass opens up when there is more than normal pressure or is it always open?
2. If only by higher pressure, does it open during ambient cold start? (ambient for me is 55F +/- 5F) What I mean is if the oil viscosity is thick enough to cause that much pressure.
In any event I'd put a filter like this on if/when I ever got a spin-on adaptor and if they make one that would fit. (just posted the first link I found, a few companies make these)

or I'm sure someone could move to a system like this if it fit and/or if they had a friend who has a machine shop.

...or you could just buy the billet filter that LN sells...
You know...when you have the urge to drop $250 on an oil filter.
Even at KK change intervals, I couldn't go through $250 in oil filters.

Does it fit the regular spin on adapter?
And of course they recommend it over the $8 Napa filter... =D
Being dumb and not knowing what the oil numbers mean on the gauge I just assume it's in bypass when it's 4-5 or whatever the top two numbers are when it's almost pegged out on idle when cold.
Maybe it's not and I'm wrong, but either way it's a reason I take warmup a bit slower when it's cold.
Just asking it here or maybe it's another thread, but couldn't they (Porsche in the first place) have ran an oil line through the shaft like connecting rods do up to the pin? Or wouldn't that be enough oil/pressure?
Connecting rods don't have an oil passage. They are always solid and this not only for Porsches. You guys need to put the cool aid down if you don't know what you are talking about. If you are concerned that the factory housing bypass valve got weak over time then just get a new housing. It's a $30 part.
It's no longer politically correct to reference drinking the kool-aid. Please don't ask me how I became aware of this. It involved "sensitivity training."
You'd be amazed at how much tongue-biting is required to make it through "sensitivity training." I think I swallowed at least a cup of my own blood that day.
