This year when I changed my oil I used a Wix 51042, which I understand is the same filter as the Napa Gold 1042.

Well, out of amusement I ran the cylindrical calculations on Volume and Surface area.

For further amusement and since I was curious, I ran the same calculations on my Mobil M1-107:

Suggestion
I don't think any of us is going to run a filter/oil change at an interval that would amount to a clogged up filter, so I'm not counting on that advantage.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Last year I installed a LN Engineering spin-on oil filter adapter. It came with a Napa Gold 1042 filter. This year when I changed my oil I used a Wix 51042, which I understand is the same filter as the Napa Gold 1042.
A while back a friend who builds street rods told me that the LS1 guys often use a longer filter than the standard 51042. He was talking about the 51522, which has the same diameter and threading as the 51042, but is just over an inch longer. I've attached data sheets, in case anyone's still reading.
Anyway, it seems like the longer filter would still be short enough not to extend down past the oil pan, at least not on my car (I have a 1/2" deep sump kit). My question is, would there be any substantive benefit to using the longer filter? Does a 33% longer filter have 33% more filtration material -- and if so, how much difference would it make?
Yeah, I know, this is almost as bad as yet another oil thread ... maybe I should just give in and take my car to one of those places with the hot baristas
I think it largely depends on your drain intervals. Assuming 33% more material, I think the additional media would be beneficial only if the original got to the point it could no longer filter properly which would mean its seriously clogged.
Assuming you dont follow the recommended 15K interval and stick to a more reasonable 5-7K I'm not sure theres a definite benefit.
Well, out of amusement I ran the cylindrical calculations on Volume and Surface area.
Wix 51042 V=22.81 A=44.64 (height is 3.404 and r is 1.4605)
Wix 51522 V=30.33 A=54.94 (height is 4.526 and r is 1.4605)
So in essence, you get 33% more Volume and 23% more surface area with the 51522. More oil volume can't hurt. Not much given the volume of an oil filter overall, but any increase in oil system volume would be advantageous. The increase in surface area doesn't mean more filtration, that's up to the filter media, but it would amount to an increase in flow due a greater surface area (same pressure across a greater surface area with identical filter media size). I would say that if it does not hang down past the oil pan, go for the 51522.
I don't think any of us is going to run a filter/oil change at an interval that would amount to a clogged up filter, so I'm not counting on that advantage.
For further amusement and since I was curious, I ran the same calculations on my Mobil M1-107:
V=32.42 A=56.41 (height is 3.15 and r is 1.81)
I do have an LN Oil Filter adapter and use a Mobil M1-107. It appears even with your increase in height with the WIX 51522, I get more volume and more surface area than either of those choices. Food for thought....
