Probably the IMS bearing that I had changed right after I bought the car.

I've used BumperPlugs products on two Porsches without any paint or discoloration issues.

Suggestion
My dumbest expenditure is $300 for the dealer to replace the heater core to fix our lack of heat in the cabin, only to find out on my own that it was $5 disintegrating foam that was the issue.

Simple Green using a Ryobi 18v cordless pressure washer then a distilled water pressure rinse followed by a blow dry and a wipe with Gunk engine shine.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My soon to be rebuilt tiptronic transmission. Car was supposed to be bullet proof with a rebuilt engine. What possibly could go wrong? Transmission leaking and slipping wasn't even on my radar. Oh well...
The tranny is at Dr Steve's Transmission Service in Manchester NH. I dropped it off last week and am waiting to hear what it needs. They did not remove it from the car. I had a P-car Indy shop drop the motor and tranny (discussed in my Trunk Cable and Other Musings thread) and I delivered the tranny to the shop.
I am with you there.
I purchased genuine Techart valve stem caps from Germany.
I was going to Techart my whole car, but stopped after steering wheel and suspension.
Good stuff, but couldn't justify the final $$, sold the various items I didn't use.
I think I bought a knockoff sill umbrella. Something just doesn't seem right, lol
Actually, I think the dorkiest (maybe not stupidest) thing I bought was the Porsche projector light for the doors (I bought a spare pair to keep on the shelf, lol)!
I have the same wing as well, and an oem umbrella in the cubby never used !
Havent purchased anything ridiculous for the car yet, though Ive been shopping wheels and tires I dont need lately. Im still catching up on deferred maintenance from previous owners (coils/plugs/motor mounts, etc) As for unnecessary, I immediately threw a short shifter and a stainless ball shifter **** in the car after I bought it in December of this year... but thats a process I do with every manual car I own !
Mine was definitely the aftermarket smog pump. I should have not cheaped out and should have gotten original or something close to it.
It fits perfectly and does the job. No more CEL.
But it sounds like Im running a shop vac in the back of the car!
The combination switch on the steering column. I bought it before taking it apart, only to find the one stalk was just missing the bolts holding it together. Dealer wouldn't take it back.
For me it was used Coilovers (w/o adjustable damping), not sure what I was thinking. Of course, ended up with the ones I wanted all along and paid twice along the way.
After discussing this topic last night with myself over a glass of Merlot, I remembered that when I first purchased my car, those type of purchases happened frequently.
1st came the showroom poster for garage with C2 Coupe with Carrera Spoiler in a color similar to my Orient Red Metallic
2nd, another poster for garage for the 40th AE. It stated 2003. Not realizing the 40th AE is a 2004 model. But that was just a few weeks after owning the car
Still a nice poster.
After a few years of ownership, the logistics of purchasing fell off a cliff.
Porsche Car Wash Sponge
We all need a Porsche Gas Can
Silly, but a great $12 spent, a pair of knock off Porsche Shoulder Belt Pads from ebay. They are 5+ years old and would buy again.
Well, I just bought and ordered the 996.1 front bumper from RUF in Germany. Originally started with the GT3 exhaust tips since I have a GT3 bumper.
I don't even know if the exhaust tips will fit... but we'll find out...
and I don't think I will be disappointed with the bumper
Oh, I also ordered a new handbrake in the light maple wood from ebay
I bought a "911 original dealer catalog from MY2002" from ebay... to discover when arrived that was the same book that comes with the car documentation...
Just out of curiosity, what does it cost to ship a bumper form Germany to California?
I had looked at the RUF bumper a couple of years ago but was skeptical of the odds of it arriving unscathed. Also, on their website, they only could manage a single low res picture of the bumper. If I'm going to fork out $2,000 I need at least two pics.
My dumbest expenditure is $300 for the dealer to replace the heater core to fix our lack of heat in the cabin, only to find out on my own that it was $5 disintegrating foam that was the issue.
But hey, glad to do my part to help keep the employees at the dealership employed!
P.S. - a have an extra perfectly good heater core if anyone wants it ...
It was 550 euros to ship them both, which I hope since it is coming from RUF themselves that it will be packed and secured to the upmost standard.
I know exactly what you mean though. The parts manager I was in communication with sent me a catalog as well of all in stock parts, so I had the extra picture
I just scanned through all of my purchases, and there are some things I like better than others, and a few upgrades I haven't installed yet.
The only thing I purchased and decided to not install was the eBay headers.
But they looked really cool mounted on my garage wall until a local Rennlister asked to buy them(actually had 2 Rennlisters ask about buying them in 1 week) and I sold them to make more space on my garage wall.
Now the garage art headers on the garage wall have been replaced with Agency Power headers. ...Shrug
But there's nothing that I've bought that I think was stupid.
Was there ever a follow up story on the red Targa? Is it still in Georgia getting a new life? Just think how much more it would have sold for In todays market
Ahhh, got one more to add (embarrassed to show photo): Bumper plugs that I paid extra to have them come painted black to match car and the paint fell off within months. Now I have two white 'eyes' on my front bumper. I'm thinking of adding a smile to make it complete.
Absolutely. No doubt the car has a very nice stance and presence, just an overall sad story for the buyer, but will come out better once done at FSI.
Could have sworn Jake said he would make an update, so possible it's still in GA. Agreed, it probably would have fetched even more if it were on auction today.
Did you order them off BumperPlugs.com by chance? This is something been meaning to do, but hesitant if the paint isn't that good at a cost of around $60.
Because I like things "just so" it irritated me this piece and its screws were missing from my car when I got it. 20 minutes at the part counter trying to find it to order it and $80+ later I got a piece of sheet metal trim and a few factory screws a week later.
0.0 people would notice besides me even with the hood open on a black car. Boy was I happy the day I installed it though. Think: dad on A Christmas Story happy. Dumb, I know.
Isn't this the key piece to secure the top of the bumper cover to the car? There's a piece that the cover slides into that essentially aligns the top and then this piece is put over the top to secure the cover and add rigidity. Did it have the screws holding the bumper cover on without this piece in place? I surely would notice and would have replaced it. This is not just a fashion plate.
I bought a cigarette lighter assembly from the dealership for $6.50, $7.70 shipping and handling. I don't smoke. I toasted the other one trying to make my genuine Porsche trickler work. Now I'm wondering which is the stupidest item between the two. Anyway it's all in the Porsche family,eh??
A post-purchase inspection. Told me nothing I didn't know other than getting me worried it had body work (it didn't--they just hadn't looked very hard). And fancy oil.
Paul
Yes, you're right, so it wasn't totally vanity to purchase and the screws that were all missing. The rear bumper certainly wasn't flopping around but the holes in the plastic were slightly misaligned from the screw holes. Installing it all back to factory tidied things up and made them "right".
I missed your post a few days back. All I use is Simple Green as a starting point and some soft brushes and rags to turn dirty to clean. Then I dry everything and Aerospace 303 for all the plastic bits. You'd be surprised how easy it is to keep clean once it's clean. Every wash I raise the hood and dry up the water that got through the grill. I only touch up the Aerospace 303 a couple times a summer. Here's a before and after of when I got it to how it looks now. As you can tell the PO was not a neat freak.
Well done. I take a similar approach here with some Chemical Guys VLR and works great. It's so much more enjoyable working on a clean car. I found it funny that the shop that did my clutch/flywheel/RMS/IMS pointed out how clean my wheel wells were and it was one of the cleaner cars they worked on.
Probably the IMS bearing that I had changed right after I bought the car. Early 996.1 with the double row bearing. 65k miles. Factory bearing came out looking fresh as a daisy. I spent $3k just to be able to tell a potential buyer that its been done if I ever decide to sell the car.
Similar regimen for me. Simple Green using a Ryobi 18v cordless pressure washer then a distilled water pressure rinse followed by a blow dry and a wipe with Gunk engine shine. The washer is rated at 320psi but more like 200 in reality. The pressure washer with distilled also works good on the wheels/calipers/wells without the spotting from tap water. A quick spray in the garage every couple hundred miles keeps the dust from building up. Very convenient.
EDIT: oops
just realized this topic is "stupidest 996 expenditure" but this $80 washer works great and I use it all the time.
Actually have to modify mine, it was valve stem caps but I had to buy them twice because someone either stole one of mine or mechanic forgot to put it back on. Just realized after I opened a box thats been sitting my garage for six months with my front bumper insert and I found them. So 8 valve stem caps is my stupidest purchase.
