Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Be careful with those that don't have a direction lever (so you can't change the direction of the ratchet).

Another possibility (though I haven't run into it yet) is triple square - I've run into these on Volkswagon vehicles...

Suggestion

I seem to use wobble extensions a lot on this car - get a quality set in varying lengths and you'll be happy.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In preparing to do some jobs on the car are there 'special' Porsche specific tools that are needed for the more basic type of work? I'm not talking about putting a new clutch in or anything like that. I know that I need a set of Torx drivers and it would appear that there are also 'safety' Torx (?). Thanks in advance for your suggestions...

POST 2Original post

I haven't done anything really too involved yet either, but what I've found I've needed is pretty basic stuff - metric wrenches of all types (socket/ratchet, box end, open end etc.) also, Torx (a few different types including socket type and long shafted), Allen, Torque wrenches (1/2, 3/8 and/or 1/4" drive). 1 thing I've recently gotten is a set of "Female Torx" sockets - while regular sockets will fit these heads, you get a better fit and less chance of stripping with the female torx sockets. Another possibility (though I haven't run into it yet) is triple square - I've run into these on Volkswagon vehicles... Then there are the fluid handling items like brake bleeders and coolant vacuum pumps...

POST 3Original post

For most DIY items a good quality set of hand tools is all you need - sockets, crow foot wrenches, torx and hex, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 ratchets, etc... I seem to use wobble extensions a lot on this car - get a quality set in varying lengths and you'll be happy. Some folks prefer universals, but I hate all of the variability that brings...a good set of wobble extensions has made my DIY journey easy. Get a quality torque wrench or two. Besides some typically tight clearances, the 996 is a joy to work on.

POST 6Original post

A torque wrench is always a good thing to have on hand as well.

I find that a set of metric ratcheting box wrenches is handy for working in some of the tight spaces in the 996 engine. Probably not necessary, but nice to have.

I also think the wobble extensions are the best kept secrets and totally under appreciated. Yes, these could be very handy in some cases. Be careful with those that don't have a direction lever (so you can't change the direction of the ratchet). You may trap the ratchet and get stuck if you use those at a tight space where the head of the bolt may hit a hard surface when you back the bolt out and lock the wrench in place before it's too late to notice it.

POST 10Original post

A set of tripple square sockets (they look a lot like Torx). The best thing is to just start the job and when you run into an isue where you need more tools just go buy them. Buy 2 of everything or in my case 3 of everything. This way I can always find one when I need it, even if the garage is a total disaster.
