Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I was at my indy garage today and the owner mentioned that I should sell my 2000 996 3.4 and get a newer 3.6 instead as the 3.4 has been known to have internal problems like slipped sleeves .He has changed a few motors that just suddenly broke. He was not talking about the ims issue.

Plus once everything is fixed you're now running the risk of someone playing bumper cars with you and your now (for example) $25k car that's still not paid off which also has another $2-5-10k in prevention thrown in it...
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I sometimes read that the motor itself is bullet proof once the ims has been upgraded. I wonder what percentage have had these issues and if it is a real worry. I have a higher mileage 996 with an upgraded ims that runs like new. I know there are no guaranties with anything mechanical but he did get me thinking.
I am not worried but just passed along his comment . He is an honest owner of a well established and respected garage but he has a tendency to be negative. Works on Porsche, Ferraris Audis, MB, Bmw. I know there is a failure rate other than IMS but I do wonder what that percentage is. I also know of two BMW owners with the V8 engine that had blown engines with little mileage so all cars have some sort of failure rate except......." Toyota".Just kidding.
That.
We can take care of the easy/affordable stuff but you never know what's going to just fail - or I guess some here do know and then you're paying more than the car is worth for them to fix those issues. Plus once everything is fixed you're now running the risk of someone playing bumper cars with you and your now (for example) $25k car that's still not paid off which also has another $2-5-10k in prevention thrown in it...
Personally from what I've read I like the 3.4 engine, but there are examples of all the models doing high miles and being fine.
Carping about the '99 specifically would contradict something that Jake once said about the '99's reliability (see my sigpic) - and #1 fanboy simply would not do such a thing.
