Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
With my car it was a visual inspection in their parking lot and test drive.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just curious with prices so low on some 996's I seen online when looking for mine, is selling it to carmax a better idea to some instead of dealing with lowballers and getting an instant solid offer? Has anybody recently got theirs appraised or know roughly what they're paying for them? I know they base their prices on auctions.
The consensus seems to be if it is high mileage you might make out alright but if it is low mileage you will be better off selling elsewhere. Never sell in the winter regardless.
My experience with Carmax: If you bring them something they'll sell on the lot, you may get a surprisingly decent offer. However, once cars are too old and/or in too poor condition to sell at Carmax (which means Carmax will be wholesaling/auctioning the vehicle), you're going to get a KBBish offer. As you know, KBB on 996's is jaw-droppingly low.
Unless you need to unload the car for financial reasons - like your spouse is in jail - I don't think Carmax is the way to go for a 996.
There are also some slimeballs who dump cars they know are swirling the drain - like 996's with metal in the oil, for example - on Carmax. These people suck and should be banished to a life of driving a Honda Insight.
Agree that the people are slimeballs that do that kind of thing knowingly. But I don't feel bad for Carmax because that's part of business. Whether it's a P-car or something else, the time-bomb concept can exist with any car.
Carmax isn't going to put any appreciable mileage on any car they buy. It's going to get flipped to the next owner, who gets to inherit a time bomb. Crappy karma.
I took my 02 C4S to get "appraised" once because I thought I'd have to liquidate it quickly to buy a 930. There were/are no issues with the car (which I still own and drive regulary), and they offered me $12k.
Luckily the 930 was a rusted out, full restoration job so it was easy to pass on.
Those prices are definitely on the low side but not as low as I would expect from them, do you guys know if they do their own version of a PPI where they put it on a lift and have their mechanic look at it or do they just have an appraiser look over the car and say here is what you can get?
$10k-$11k is what you will get. Your modified headlights, wheels, and suspension may drop that offer sub $10k depending on how knowledgeable the inspector is.
Do you have any connections to someone with access to the dealers' auctions (Manheim and Adesa)? You can run it through the auction and get a really good real-world value. If it doesn't meet your reserve, it costs you a $25 no-sale fee. If you do get what you want, you'll pay a seller's fee of about $250.
Right now, stuff is selling at auction for as much as you can get in a private party sale and sometimes more. Spring Car Buying Fever is still in the air and dealers struggle to keep inventory on their lots, so they will pay moee at auction this time of year.
That being said, they really look for cars under 80,000 miles. But still, not a bad way to test the waters. I have done this for friends. My stepdad did this with his car dealer buddy every time he bought a new vehicle and traded in the old one - the trade in value was what the car sold for at auction.
I'm not really looking to sell it more so just curious since there is a carmax down my street if they made me a solid offer though I would consider it. To fund for an Air cooled 911
Well how long do you plan on keeping it? I'm not sure if air cooled prices are going to double again. Not soon anyway. You may be better off just enjoying your car for now.
That's completely ridiculous; why would someone be a bad person for accepting an offer to buy their car for any reason? As always, if someone is offering to buy a car from another party, the onus is on them to understand what they're doing.
I'm not in a big rush I had a 78sc in the past and now the prices have close to doubled so maybe the market will stabilize soon then I'll be back in another.
