They had to access the ECU and locate the proper wire and then run a continuity test on one of the wires from the ECU to the O2 sensor.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Greetings. As a new owner of a 996 C2 I have run across a problem. I acquired my vehicle around 2 years ago from a close friend who fell ill. I drove it a little under his registration when I first got it and then stored it under cover in a heated garage since. I started it and drove it on a small private road every 60-90 days. Recently I registered it for the road. The check engine light came on and I checked the code. O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2. I swapped the sensors and still get the same code indicating a wiring problem. Can anyone recommend a qualified outfit to troubleshoot the system in the Glastonbury Connecticut area? I am under the gun as I just received a notice to get the emissions check. Thanks in advance.

POST 3Original post

Most likely a bad cat if its sensor 2. There r used oem ones around or magnaflow has carb certified replacents.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is there a procedure to troubleshoot the cat?

POST 5Original post

Before you get crazy try running a large bottle of Seafoam cleaner in 3/4 tank of fresh good gas and take it on a spirited drive keep the rpm’s high burn through half the amount of gas let it sit overnight and repeat till you are empty my past experience is the car is babied and needs serious exercise

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That certainly sounds like a good first step. I just happen to have around 3/4 tank of fuel and a can of seafoam in the shop. The previous owner changed the exhaust and headers but the cats are original I believe. Ill let you know what happens.

POST 8Original post

Make her SING!!!!!!! (of course after the engine temp comes up to 180 or so)

POST 9Original post

Out of curiosity, do you have aftermarket cats? If so, you may need o2 extensions. Google 996 02 extensions and you will get an idea of what they are. Welcome to the 996 club. It's a great car!

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I went through emissions today and failed. As I expected. Before I went I added 16oz. of sea foam and did around 90 minutes of spirited driving, combining some back roads with highway spurts. A most enjoyable time. At the test facility the manager felt it was a wiring problem and not the cat. I should have posted the codes in my first post but here they are. P111700 Cylinder 1 Sensor 2, Heating circuit short, to ground. P014000 o2 sensor circ., bank sensor 2, slow response P013900 o2 sensor circ., bank 1 sensor 2, slow response The manager maintained the first code indicated a wiring problem. Has anybody had a code like that, and if so, what transpired? Any help is appreciated. And again thanks in advance to everyone who has and will respond.

POST 12Original post

Do you have oem or aftermarket cats? If they are aftermarket cats, do you have o2 extensions?

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As far as I know the cats are original.

POST 14Original post

Sounds like my problem partly I used Bosch boxed items not from FCP and they failed the map sensor went bad as it got hot the Porsche part is $500 but worth it to pass inspection 2 of my 4 02sensors were bad but brand new it gave me similar codes as yours best to bring it to a good shop so you don’t do like me and pay 2x for the same job

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 18190685

i some what agree with the inspector. Its not hard to do a continuety check back to the dme and then test the voltage at the plug. I would expect 2-3hr diagnostic charge from an indy. Proper diagnostics will prevent u from spending money in parts u do not need. I would be checking for rodant damage to the harness behind the coolant tank or by the firewall pass through by the main connector on the pass side. My issue was the actual pin in the harness at the dme was spred by a tech and it wasnt making contact. What r your o2 sensor readings? Most inexpensive readers can see this and even graph it. Unfortunately we wont be much help withiut more telemetry.

POST 16Original post

Jay, late to the party here, but when you swapped the O2 sensors, are you sure you swapped the post cat sensors and not the pre-cat? I'm in Glastonbury and happy to stick my somewhat educated nose under the hood if it helps. This does not sound complicated. If you need a shop, Coventry Motorcar is a good one.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Little late responding. Im on my way home from the cape. Im pretty sure I swapped the proper sensors. They were located on top of the cats downstream from the first set.

POST 19Original post

I had similar codes on a 2001 C4 and a new Bosch MAF sensor from Autozone ($165ish) corrected it.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I finally got my issue resolved. I recently brought it to Musante Motorsports. They are a Porsche shop and they have the Porsche diagnostic software. They had to access the ECU and locate the proper wire and then run a continuity test on one of the wires from the ECU to the O2 sensor. It appears the wire itself failed, as the connectors and connections were good. After the wire was replaced the codes cleared. I found this very unusual to have a failure like that, as it is invariably the connector or the connection to the connector. A shout out to the guys at Musante.

POST 21Original post

Good deal. Its amazing what 1-2 hours of diagnostics with a skilled shop will save a custromer.
