But regardless as mentioned I wasn't expecting a specific target goal other than I didn't want to loose horsepower and have the car run poorly, run correctly with the exhaust modifications i have made.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello, I'm looking for recommendations of tuning options if any for early 3.4 cable car 996. I'm located in Phoenix Arizona I'm quite familiar with tuning other vehicles and even broke down some industry walls with other automotive makes/models myself because of limited options, or options I didn't think were worth the money for that particular project. I'm aware of the engines limitations and Porsche certainly does a fantastic job of producing all thier cars and doesn't leave much on the table. I'm also aware of the variety of expensive aftermarket bolt ons that arguably if not proven actually decrease horsepower instead of the gains they claim. So not looking for those arguments, not looking for miracle mystery horsepower gains. Had a 991, a 997 S loved, enjoyed them sold them. This car is sentimental, setting it up for myself don't need opinions about personal preferences. Just looking for a company, business, individual, that can help me tune the vehicle I'm guessing remotely. Pcm by mail or device i probably dont own. I have a variety of hand held tuners and software for other vehicles. With most vehicles I can upload my cars info the tuner creates a file based on my car, mods, needs, limits, sends it back to me and I load that file to my vehicle with my equipment. However pretty sure nothing I have will work on this car so looking for recommendations. Specifically interested in cat/muffler/ headers delete tunes (track use only) having the car set up tuned to idle and operate with those modifications, not have a check engine light triggered etc. Start up first crank, not be vaccume/ fuel starved needing 3 cranks, not stall out because rpm drops below 500 when coning to a stop. Also absolutely do not want to loose horsepower power but not expecting to run down turbos or even new Hondas lol either. I have seen claims of 320hp done with tuning this exact set up but not on 3.4 cable car only 3.4wire. Reguardless if those claims are true or not still wanting and willing to explore options if any. I do plan on purchasing a dyno test locally and will be happy to post results for any business or individual to use for thier work if they choose. Any recommendations, pricing, products, options if any appreciated thank you. Really looking for first hand experience but appreciate any info I'm sure I haven't seen everything out there.
FVD Brombacher is who I used after I installed their catless x-pipe. Didn't expect a lot but my times this year against the same last year have improved.
I will go as far to say that any claim of 320hp is a straight up lie even in e-throddle car. A 30k Raby built 3.8 (3.6 punched out) track performer 2 only dynoed a 323 at the wheels. Even if they were reffering to crank hp its a pipe dream. U have a long list of wants and i wish u luck, but my advise is to leave it alone and enjoy the car as it is. Sorry i only have my opinion to offer.
Haven't used them yet personally, but Softronic is well regarded. Here's the link to their cable throttle tune.

Sounds like you may be looking for the works. I would give Rhonda at FVD Brombacher a call. They have software that works in combination with their 100 and 200 cell cats and m&m headers.
Well horsepower numbers, type of dyno, conditions, results all vary to certain degrees period. A dyno test with forced air vs none what so ever, room temperature, on and on. So to say 320hp has never been achieved on any dyno test done to a modified 3.4 motor that was advertised and tested as producing around 300hp seems quite foolish to consider impossible. But regardless as mentioned I wasn't expecting a specific target goal other than I didn't want to loose horsepower and have the car run poorly, run correctly with the exhaust modifications i have made. As for enjoy the car, what do you think I'm doing lol. This is enjoyment for me. I enjoy working on, driving, researching, discussing, sometimes even breaking things turns into enjoyment. The process is enjoyment for me. My daily driver/work vehicle ran 11.23@126mph in the 1/4, 24-26mpg, emissions compliant pickup truck. (Image attached)
Made from a salvage yard 1 ton dumptruck, equipped with what the diesel industry calls the worst diesel engine ever produced that has brought me nothing but enjoyment for 180,000 miles doing mostly what it was never intended to do. All for less than the sales tax on a new truck. We all get our enjoyment through a variety of differences. Some like a challenge some don't. What I have already done with canbus alone to my 996 for monitoring i have yet to see. I enjoy trying, learning. Thank you for sharing yours.
Oh boy the po is a 6.0l ford guy. There is gonna be no way we will change his mind.
I understand the diesle truck thing, there is a lot left on the table with those motors. My dd is 395k twined cummins in a crappy dodge wrapper. Oh and motor makes fuel when i run it
.
If there is a chance for a few more hp it will be through fvd but it cost significantly more per hp then on an american truck.
It's a 6.4 so I guess that makes me a 6.4 guy? I do own 2 6.4s... hmmm.. but I also own a bmw, jaguar, corvette and a challenger so maybe i just like what i like for my own reasons 🤷♂️ . Dont expect my old 996 to keep up with my single cab in the quarter just used it to make the point thats been lost already. I mentioned many times I'm looking for tuning options to set my car up to run with headers, and free flowing exhaust, not have check engine light activated by 02 readings. I'm literally just looking to pick up some sound, and not loose horsepower. If those goals can be met and I gain even 2 hp that is just a bonus or a dyno inconsistency lol doesn't matter. The gain if any is not my main objective.
Oh boy a 6.4l guy even worse
. (Hoping u know im just busting your *****).
So fvd deff has some if the most research for ehxaust and intake gains. They design and manufacture the M&M Cup exhausts for porsche. I have a used set of their headers and planing in their 200 cel cats for my gt motor, but thats a whole different animal.
Good luck and post dyno # if u can. Some of us like see the proof.
A guy who's figured out how to push the limits of a 6.4 and make them dependable is clearly a man of the worst caliber, sold his soul to the devil and deals in the black arts for sure...
Garage,
Maybe we should start with your expectations.
Whats been done to your car so far? What has been serviced, upgraded and refreshed over its life?
How much are you willing to spend and to what extent are you willing to go to get 20 more hp without cels appearing?
With enough money and a firm committment you can do anything.
ok so my car is approaching 101k miles. When I got it it had a bore out throttle, Im not certain if it was FVD or someone else, kN panel air filter, and fabspeed max flow exhaust. I was able to hit 60 in 4.9 seconds, not hitting the rev limiter. The engine seems to be in pretty good shape almost no oil consumption. Now the car is lighter no front spare, no back seats, Carrera S 3.8 airbox with kN panel, ipd plenum, fabspeed catless x pipes with the cheaters so you dont get CELs, headers, APR tune. The cats weight a lot, the factory mufflers weight a lot, the spare weights a lot. I couldnt find a custom tunner but that would have been the best. Last time I tested the acceleration was down to 4.6 seconds to 60. The last change I made was my mechanic installed the ipd plenum and he also switched my soul headers for Tex squirrel agency power headers. The agency power headers are actually over 3.5 lbs lighter than the souls. I was told that the ipd plenum was the last mod you should do and also some concerns about low end torque. Anyway I believe the tune got me more low end torque and JAKE Raby of FSI had said that the agency power headers made some torque. The car is faster lighter and sounds better. Surprise it doesnt drone. My turbo its actually louder. If you could find a tunner that would dyno tune that would be the way to go. Its super important to keep the fuel system clean, also clean the top piston carbon deposits use CRC GDI thru the intake. Im happy with the car, it could only be faster with a bigger engine. Good luck.
Garage,
Now is your chance to contact Rhonda at FVD about exhaust, software and the works. She just mentioned a RL forum discount to members on an FVD post this morning.
Ask her about the exhaust components developed by m&m for fvd brombacher which manufactures the exhaust systems for porsche motorsports racing that are actually used in professional racing. Hint, hint.
Also ask her about the software that ties in with the factory software, keeps it updated from the factory, as well as will configure their m&m headers, cats as well as intake to work together. And will update it as needed by sending it to you.
Not suggesting that there aren't other providers out there with high quality solutions. I bet there are many. But if you want a well thought out turnkey solution from a company that actually races their stuff professionally, you want to take a hard look at FVD.
Best of luck in your build. Please keep us posted. All of us enjoy sharing info and learning. But at the end of the day, you have to choose what you believe is the best solution for you. What we think doesn't matter.
I have softronics on my cable 3.4 986 and actually called softronics to discuss software a few years ago. They were super helpful and noted that even a dyno tune specific to my car probably wasn't worth the money for the possible gain. In reality you're probably splitting 3-5hp between all tuners.

I dont think any ecu tuning is required for these.. I have them on a 3.6 C4S and the power increase (specifically low end torque) was more noticeable than when I switched to x51 heads/cams/manifolds
Somebody recently mentioned a tune from Vivid where the throttle response was markedly improved. To me, this is a huge plus for rev matching downshifting and just overall driving enjoyment. I've asked the question a million times and nobody has been able to explain why Porsche throttle response is so slow but it seems to be on purpose
I would question that tune. When you go to the site and open up product description it says tune for the 99-01 C2 and the C4. The C4 had an e throttle since day one. The 99 Is the only one with a cable throttle. Give them a call before you buy. Even with APR there were some ECU numbers they were not tuning.
