Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Galvanized body & chassis help a great deal, but theyre still not impervious to rust.
Does anyone know how or why 22 year old 996s and other models have such amazing paint jobs that keep the cars looking wonderful over so many miles and years? I own a 2000 996 and used to do a double take every time I look in the garage. Is it just me or does Porsche do a superior job on their original paint job? Alsono rot or rust. How do they do it?
They really do have a fantastic paint process. I measured that paint on mine after the paint correction and I can't remember what it was BUT it was "thicker" than my 2015 VW Touareg. The photo below is unedited and taken by an iPhone 12 Pro Max. The clarity is impeccable.
Their early cars were literally rust buckets In true Porsche style they figured it out and improved their finishing process mightily! Galvanized body & chassis help a great deal, but theyre still not impervious to rust. Frequent washes occasional waxes and basic maintenance go a long way in keeping them looking new
Porsche began a quiet revolution with chassis building and paint in the 1990s. Robots and advanced techniques have been the game changer. If you are impressed with your car, the newer car production processes are another leap forward.
Galvanized body was a huge step in the right direction and helped prevent rust. I've seen a full detail of a 996 where the experienced detailer said that these cars have a pretty hard paint which I'd imagine helps with longevity but also can be more challenging to correct. At the end of the day, it's a combination of what Porsche did at the factory and the owner taking proper care. You can trash Porsche paint too but I think most owners take decent care of their cars.
Yea, Porsche's paint process is pretty amazing, but nothing earth shattering by today's standards. When you're charging $100 -$300K for a car, you have many more options for unique very expensive paints. e.g. Metallic paints that appear to change color in different lights.
Totally agree about modern galvanization and corrosion protection - one of the biggest advancements in protecting the structure of the car in the last 20-30 years. Porsche dips their cars into a tank of zinc phosphate and then a special coating is applied through an electrically conductive process called cathodic dip coating. All the welds are specially treated and sealed using a PVC type material. Then after that, a standard three stage process is applied - primer, base, and clear coat. Then the car is taken through a fast drying process (i.e. oven) before the clear coat process is applied. Then once dried again, paint correction and inspection is done to the car. It's a pretty impressive process to watch. You can look it up on YouTube.
I have a 2000 C2 and read a full page ad in the most recent P magazine where the ceramic retailer said that older cars should not have a ceramic treatment because they lacked a clear coat. Is this true of my car?
I think it must be because you picked such a good shade of blue. One day I will wash mine and it may look as good. Amazing how good mine looks without a wash. I had to take this photo to see what kind of clearance I was getting going into my driveway. Surprised at how well it is holding up. Not that it doesn't need some help. That will be another story.
I'd consider the paint very good on Porsches in general, but the Lapis blue on my car is very soft and is a real pain to keep nice looking. I'm pretty it gets scratches and swirls if you even fart too close to it. It does clean up nicely though.
