Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I parked my car after a visit to the folks who are going to restore my 17" turbo twists (that's another post) and noticed something dangling from my front bumper. It's clearly been cut, and I believe it has not been cut recently, it is more likely someone in the last 22 years had something wired in, maybe a radar detector? Laser Beams? I stuffed the wire back up in there again, because I'm an ostrich. Any ideas folks? Maybe power for the radiator fans? But the fans work fine. I think. Temps never go above 180 or so, and I have heard them kick on. Very loud. I need to invest in a durametric dang. Thanks and....TGIF. mystery wire...

POST 2Original post

What does the end of the wire look like? Is there a connector or plug on the end?

I should have taken a better picture of it. It's a single black wire, light gauge and copper core. I'll go get a better photo. Thanks @DBJoe996 Here we go....it actually has two cut ends. and there's more wire, but it's either attached or hung up on something, I don't want to yank on it too hard. I started my car and let it idle, with AC on full auto. It is bloody hot here. For about a minute, there was only one fan running. Drivers side. Then, high speed fans kicked in and clearly were on both sides. I guess I have a weekend project. Low speed fans should be on BOTH sides, right? Thanks all.

That's a good thought, but no, it's a different wire, and the sensor is, happily, in place. Thanks!!!

POST 7Original post

Does your horn work? That's the only other thing I can think of that's in that area.

Old radar detector sensor wire? Takes 15min to pull the bumper u may want to just do it and u can clean the rads while its off.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18275015

That's my guess. I'll get in there ASAP and see. Thanks

POST 12Original post

^^^^ this. The wiring for the fans isn't in that area and doesn't have any excess length. The laser defense option was quite rare and never listed on the options plate, so maybe... Love a good mystery! Good luck.

POST 13Original post

Wire is too big for horn wire. IIRC the horn wiring is smaller gauge and further over to the side. The low speed fan not working is because the low speed resistor for the fan has failed.

POST 14Original post

That looks like it belongs to some kind of aftermarket accessory that was installed by a previous owner, like a fog light or something.

POST 15Original post

There isn't any wiring that runs along the underside like that, my vote is something aftermarket has been run

POST 16Original post

I think it's for the exclusiv Porsche parachute option. Looks like it's been pulled before.

Heh. Maybe it is the doofus valve release. But we'll have to wait for the denouement, I have decided it is too freaking humid and 🥵. No garage you see. Plus, the spa 24, and I've still got to watch the Hungarian GP qualis. No spoilers please.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

solved....it was indeed old owners radar detector wiring. Grrr. Anyway, it's 'gone' as in buttoned up. I'm not sure how useful a radar detector is but who knows maybe I'll install one. This also explains the clearly home-rolled wiring spliced off of my fuse box that has been puzzling me. And that is the 'end' of the story. Both ends. Thanks All! @De Jeeper wins the 'Hercule Poirot Award'.

Front and rear mounted radar detector is the best mod I've put in my 2 911s. I swear by my K40. Over 55k miles without any flashing lights behind me and they've had ample opportunity.

It's all about situation awareness. I recommend it. Most people that have detectors aren't speeders, they just want to avoid a ticket. That being said, you need a modern detector that filters out false alerts from cars with blind side monitoring and lane departure warning systems. This systems use the same frequencies as police radar guns. Older detectors false all the time which makes it hard to drive and to distinguish the sheep from goats if you get my drift.

POST 21Original post

142K miles in a red GT3 and no tickets and no detector. I'm a fairly aggressive, but sane driver.
