Suggestion

I suspect if most electrical components work at this time it would be a low water level fresh water flood, as salt water isnt kind to anything.I would change every fluid on the car, and check the low speed operation of the front cooling fans for good measure.

Suggestion

Start inspecting the non sealed connectors under the seat, this will tell you quite a bit in regards to the condition of the rest of the components but the clutch switch and obd2 port are not usually things that go bad in these cars.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Picked up a Flood Salvaged 2006 Carrera C2 that had metal shavings in the oil filter, along with the oil having a metallic hue, but otherwise ran fine. Took a risk the engine is probably bad. The dealer that I purchased it from was very straightforward and told me these issues upfront, along with saying the car's computer said it had been over-reved. After doing an oil and filter change at the dealer, I drove the car back home about 300 miles without issue. I am going to pull the oil filter tomorrow, once the wrench arrives from amazon, to see how bad the oil filter is now and if it's engine replacement time. The ride home made me aware of a few issues I want to resolve. - Car is too low and rides poorly from the lowering springs, I need to find factory springs to bring it back to factory height - OBD port does not communicate with the computer - need to check the fuses and then go from there - Clutch Starter Safety Switch is bypassed and the car will start without the clutch pushed in, need to order a replacement - No longer able to shift into reverse. Hopefully a shifter linkage adjustment by the blue cable - Find a Leistung exhaust clamp as the driver side is wrong and leaking Otherwise, the car is in overall good shape from being in a flood. It was a Copart car so I am unsure of the actual flood history but at this time, I have been unable to see that it was ever in one...

POST 2Original post

Err, 997. This is 996 forum. Good luck with the car though.

POST 3Original post

Despite this being a 997, I have a ton of respect for you for picking up a project like this.

POST 4Original post

The car is not too low. The poor ride is likely due to blown struts or improperly matched struts and damping relative to the lowering springs. Factory ride height is too high, IMO. My 997, at factory height was not sports car-like.

POST 5Original post

Not a bad looking car at all. I agree the ride height looks reasonable but it's hard to tell with different camera angles. You could measure it from the reference points. Did the up front dealer tell you what they did after they bought it from copart?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18276304

Yeah I originally placed this in the new member section but a mod moved it incorrectly to the 996 forum. Can a mod fix that? Got the oil filter wrench in today and about to go pull the filter. Ill take some ride height measurements at that time. Thanks for the positive replies. The dealer said the car wouldnt move when they got it and put in a new clutch and it fixed that but then they checked the filter and walked away. Will update shortly on the filter with pictures.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Pulled the filter and there was very little if no shavings. Poured the oil from the canister through a clean new white rag and nothing concerning showed up. I am going to watch it but I think the engine maybe ok at this point. Measured the ride height from the ground to the top of the wheel arch. Front is 25 5/8 Rear is 26 5/8

POST 8Original post

Wow thats a score the ride height is not far off Im actually a 1/4 inch lower in front and the rear 1/2 but I live in NYC good luck on your endeavor enjoy iit if or when the motor goes build a track monster with it

POST 9Original post

You may be able to find pictures doing a vin search. Flood cars run the spectrum from fresh water to salt water and different levels of water intrusion. Salt water cars have lots of furry corroded non sealed connectors like the ones under the seat, fresh water not so much. Start inspecting the non sealed connectors under the seat, this will tell you quite a bit in regards to the condition of the rest of the components but the clutch switch and obd2 port are not usually things that go bad in these cars. . I suspect if most electrical components work at this time it would be a low water level fresh water flood, as salt water isnt kind to anything.I would change every fluid on the car, and check the low speed operation of the front cooling fans for good measure.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 18276561

You might see more by cutting the ends off the filter and laying the filter material out flat. Also, ride height is more accurately measured from the wheel center to the edge of the fender opening; that way eliminates tire size variations from the measurement.

I wouldn't worry about this being in the "wrong forum". Basically has the same M9X engine design. Thankfully, you didn't get the '05 model with the dreaded 6204 bearing. You '06 car will have the most robust, durable factory bearing - the 6305. I wouldn't worry about that, but these cars are well known to suffer from cylinder bore scoring. Get the bores scoped! That being said, I would spend some money and have a reputable Porsche shop do an invasive post purchase inspection. I'll have to commend you on this one... you have ***** buying a flood car! Beyond mechanical issues, flood cars tend to haunt owners with electrical issues. I encourage you to have thick skin as you comb through all the possible issues... God speed!

POST 12Original post

just curious but is there some kind of public means of looking up which bearing you have based on engine code? I knew bearings were an issue but I wasnt aware that even after the 2004 year with the upgraded Porsche IMS bearing there was another revision on top of that, or maybe Im not understanding correctly.

Post your engine serial number and we'll go from there. Located on the plate next to the sump.

Your serial number reads: M96.05 (3.6L M96) 696 - model year 2006 engine 04905 - actual serial number. Note production number Based on this information, I'm 99.9% positive you have the most robust factory bearing - the 6305 large single row. Read Groovs post if you need more affirmation... https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...the-car-2.html Your engine was manufactured after Groov's
