My 2000 996 C2 manual has a loose differential, similar to the attached video. I replace the differential carrier bearings, and It made a slight improvement, but it's still loose. I suspect the transmission side cover is bent. I'm about to order the CMS aluminum billet side cover plate, but before I order the part, are there any other possible cause of loose differential besides bad bearings and bent side cover? You need to adjust the shims to suit the new bearings. I don't have the book for this gearbox. The typical way to set the shim thicknesd is to assemble with no shims. Then measure end play with a dial indicator. Add the measured end play to the factory recommended preload and select the nearset shim thickness. The diff carrier bearings also set the pinion mesh, so that needs to be checked as well. If not the ring and pinion will get destroyed very quickly.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
