Lastly, he also checked the multi-connector cable on the passenger side and taped it up a bit more.

Same thing happened to my 03, towed to P-dealer and they cleaned ATF that somehow was messing up that connector.

He also changed the ATF oil and installed a new ATF filter.

I recently had the transmission oil cooler changed (since there used to be a leak) at my indy and he also topped up the transmission oil as well so I doubt the oil is low.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I have a 2004 Tiptronic C4S and today I got a Tiptronic Emergency Run error message on my dash. I used to get this error in the past but a stop and start generally cleared the error and I would be able to get back to driving without issues.
Today however, the error would not go away. I basically had to do 50 km back home taking the service road.
I recently had the transmission oil cooler changed (since there used to be a leak) at my indy and he also topped up the transmission oil as well so I doubt the oil is low.
I ran a diagnostic using my Foxwell NT501 and came across 2 errors:
- P0701
- P0715
I've tried running the car now after a few hours of getting home and I still get the Tiptronic Emergency Run error. It seems like it is here forever.
Has anyone come across the issue of the error not going away?
My indy is 2 hours drive from me. The Porsche Center is a 1 hour drive, so I am in a bit of a weird position.
Thank you.
Those codes can imply that the "conductor plate" in the transmission is having intermittent connection problems. It's a very common problem in the Mercedes 722.6 transmission. The fix is easy, replace the conductor plate. It's not an expensive part - no need to get it from Porsche, the same part is used in Mercedes and Chrysler transmissions too. Removal and replacement, now that is not easy, took me about 4 hours.
Replace the electrical connector, too, because they can leak ATF. You will need to refill the transmission with ATF which is an adventure in itself. Plan to add 5 to 6 quarts of ATF which is Shell ATF 134 or equivalent. A new filter and gasket would be a good plan.
Your Porsche dealer or indy mechanic should know all this already.
Edit: It's possible if you clear the codes the transmission will work properly for a while, until the electrical problem comes back.

Thanks for the info. Yes, that is what I suspected. The conductor plate and the connector from the 722.6 are standard or are there variants? Not sure if I should look out for anything?
I can't really do this in the driveway (if only I had a garage!) since I suspect there will be some fluid spills here and there.
Is it a major problem to drive it in limp mode to a garage or should I call a truck to haul it?
Thanks again!
As far as I can tell there is only one design for the conductor plate that fits all 722.6 transmissions.
I think the transmission is limited to 3rd gear only in emergency run. If your drive to your indy or dealer is compatible with 3rd gear only it should be safe to drive.
Yes, it's likely that there will be ATF spilled. Also refilling the transmission requires you to be under the car with the car level and engine running to refill the trans properly. Whoever thought of that should be smacked with a trout. I'd say that without a lift this is a job for your indy/dealer.
Ok, thanks.
Yes, mine is blinking between D and 4, so I assume I only have the 4th gear.
But, as you pointed out, I think this is left best to a person with a lift.
I need to move to the suburbs and have a garage! :/
Just an update on the matter.
The indy swapped out the conductor plate and connector. He also changed some corroded transmission coolant pipes that I had with me that I was scheduled to swap in the fall. He also changed the ATF oil and installed a new ATF filter.
Lastly, he also checked the multi-connector cable on the passenger side and taped it up a bit more.
I have to say, the difference is unbelievable. The error message is gone but the shifting is noticeably smoother.
All in all, 7 hours work!
