So when swapped the mk1 front harness into the newer mk2 chassis harness i was able to depin and make things very clean but there r still grommets and factory clips that need changed.

I think inspecting the harness and looking for the structual bar under the seat would answer some questions.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys, I have just purchased my first 911, a 2001 996 Carrera 4, and are trying to figure out if its a 996.2 or 996.1. Was there any late 2001 models made in the 996.2 that still had the missing glove box etc? Or do you think the lights and body could have been somehow retrofitted? I have attached a few photos. Thanks in advance for your help. Mitchell

POST 2Original post

I am not aware of any facelifted cars with no gloveboxes, except if they were some really early turbos. But best bet is check the engine, is it 3.4 or 3.6? Eventhough the Dials as well show that this is a prefacelift car. Maybe someone changed front lights, front wings and bumpers? Mine is an early 98 car, with the prefacelift lights, that somehow someone manage to fit a GT3 (copy) bumper.

I think youre right, I found the build date which is Jan-01, from what I have read they didnt roll out the 996.2 until Aug-01, the engine is a 3.4l aswell so it must be a 996.1 thats been given a facelift at some point in its life. Bummer.

POST 4Original post

And they moved your steering wheel to the wrong side . You could always source the parts and reverse the face lift.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 18213769

Thought that was the right side? Did not even notice as mine is like that as well!

POST 6Original post

Don't let it bother you. You can put the car back to stock if needed, but consider it a small bonus.

amazing what people can do with crazy glue 😁

POST 8Original post

All 2001 Turbos are 996.2 cars with no glovebox; Turbos built after 1/2/2001 have the .2 chassis stiffener as well.

POST 9Original post

It's probably someone who has retrofitted a facelift. There's a few of them floating around out there, it's not an easy task to do, and to reverse, so I think you end up with the best of both worlds! -Matt

POST 10Original post

There may be an exception to the rule because u have a c4? Look under rear seat carpet to see if there is a metal tube that runs left to right. If so your car is a mk2 chassis. I could also tell by the wiring harnes in the frunk going to the headlights if the front is original. if bi-zenon modual is in the frunk its a mk2 harness. For the mk1 its mounted behind the pass side airbag. Also there is a difference in how the harness connects between a mk1 and 2.

POST 11Original post

If it is a 3.4 with a ZF Tiptronic then it was surely built as a Mk1.

POST 12Original post

This whole thing intrigues me. So when swapped the mk1 front harness into the newer mk2 chassis harness i was able to depin and make things very clean but there r still grommets and factory clips that need changed. If u peal back the carpet u can tell its not 100% factory. I would love to see if the headlights were spliced into a mk1 harness or the car was built as a mk1 in the mk2 chassis? I think inspecting the harness and looking for the structual bar under the seat would answer some questions.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 18214435

Not that it applies in this case, but the very early 2001 996 Turbos are Mk2 cars without the underseat support bar. That would be production up to 12/31/2000.

This is a very common factory option, dealer upgrade, or owner upgrade. In fact, its not really a GT3 bumper, its the aerokit bumper, first offered on Carerras and later a standard on the GT3 when it eventually came out. If Im not mistaken.

POST 15Original post

But that looks to be a standard .2 bumper cover. Plus Porsche would not allow an aero front without aero spoiler, me thinks. TSB and all other literature warn against it. I cant tell what the rear is from the photos.
