Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
I would almost guarantee this is an issue with the stock amp with either a bad connection or more likely a channel that is on its way out.

Suggestion
If its really static, you can pull the speaker off and check for voltage at the terminals.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I looseened and retightened the electrical connectors on the speakers and then reseated the connector in the frunk at the amp and it solved it.
I get a static from the right rear speaker, not all the time, but some of the time, and once it is doing it it won't stop doing it until the car is off. Radio on or off doesn't make a difference, either way I get this static.
If it matters, the stereo in question is the 2002 (i.e. pre-MOST) non-Bose but with the speaker in the doors.
Does it happen when not driving too? If only when driving, it could just be something scratching the paper cone. If its really static, you can pull the speaker off and check for voltage at the terminals.
I cannot think of anything that would generate sound without the radio, as the backup sensors use a different speaker under the dash. You could have a problem with the radio, which means you might want to pull it out and check for any corroded wires. Corroded wires is not a common problem with these cars, but perhaps someone went in there any made some modifications, which we have seen on occasion.
When it happens, which is not very often but often enough, it happens driving, stopped, radio on, radio off, you name it, but if I park, when I come back to the car it will be gone. It will play radio over the static if I have the radio on.
No radio mods here, but I suppose it could still be a bad wire. It almost seems like an RCA connector that is sometimes partially out, but I don't think there are any connectors of that sort in here, just a loom - is that right?
Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but Marlinspike, did you ever get this sorted? I have a similar issue with my right dash speaker. Sounds exactly like static, but does it even with radio off. Comes and goes seemingly randomly.
I would almost guarantee this is an issue with the stock amp with either a bad connection or more likely a channel that is on its way out. Hope that helps JTT.
I have the same issues with a static my right rear speaker, even when off. I switched speakers and it still occurs. It appears to not actually be my speaker but some type of resonance between the speaker and the panel. Pressing on the speaker grill stops the static sound. It usually doesn't make the sound when parked but mainly while driving.
