Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello Just picked up a 2001 Carrera and I'm putting together a list of things that I need to do. I have a bit of oil leaking near the CPS but can't tell where it's from. It doesn't get much bigger than it looks but it comes back after cleaning. I do have a leaky RMS This is on the driver side looking rear near the crank position sensor.

POST 2Original post

In for possible culprits as I'm in the same boat. I just did my RMS and AOS and just like you after cleaning (a lot) I get oil in that same area. Yours isn't as bad as mine tho

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Getting me a bit worried now since you have already done the two things I thought it might be. I was thinking it might be oil slinging from the RMS leak.

POST 4Original post

It just may be possible that the crank is worn or just a little out and the rms may not seal. Our cranks r fairly unique design with a longer overhang then other porsche motors. There is a whole thread on the weakness at a certain point toward the rear. My motor has over 200k and it leaks from rms that was done less the 10k miles ago. Im not worried and just deal with it. I may pull the trans and measure runout this winter to check it. The guys at Hartech have a support bearing they can install for a lot of money during a rebuild or there is another company with a support bearing that slides in behind the rms. Not sure about the second one as there is very little data on it.

POST 5Original post

If you took that car to Porsche and tell them it has a leak, they would disagree with you. There is no wet spot, no oily drip, only a little fuzz where dust is collected. That is not a leak worth tearing into.

POST 6Original post

Haven't been able to trace the source but I had some time to get under the car this week so I cleaned as much as I could and took it for a short drive and this is was the result. Still can't figure out where exactly it's coming from but the coolant hoses and plastics hoses that run to the front of the car also have oil soak so maybe somewhere above or behind the AOS ??? Anyway I'll do a bit more of cleaning and maybe pick up a cheap probe camera to help me see better.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Possibly the AOS. I also have oily residue building up on the plenum boot on the driver side(LHD )of the car. I'm planning to drop the tranny to replace the ims and RMS in the fall, I'll post up pics if I can see where it's all coming from if not any of the stuff mentioned above.

POST 8Original post

Looks like the baffle is not seated correctly for the AOS. It is a PAIN IN THE AOS to get right. Betting that is the source of the leak, had the same on my car (a couple of times).

POST 9Original post

I took another look last night and thought I had found my problem but from a few pictures on the web it looks as if it's normal for the seal to be visible as in these 2 threads. https://sites.google.com/site/mikefo...torreplacement http://986forum.com/forums/diy-proje...ment-tips.html

POST 10Original post

Thoroughly clean with carb cleaner. I spliced two of the spray nozzle hose's together and it allowed me to get way up and into the tight spots. Take a very short (1/2 mile) drive and get it up in the air for another look. The borescope helped me pinpoint my leak.
