Also, the stereo I installed has a USB C connection which makes it harder.
Leading evidence: 'Install has a usb c connection' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'bigger androids are similar' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install has a usb c connection' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. I think I used "USB C USB A cigarette lighter" or something like that both in Google and in Amazon.

I had to use a USB-C to USB-A adapter on the back of the stereo which broke.

Suggestion
You could just drill a small hole in the back of the cubby, run a regular cable through there to the back of the stereo and keep Cig lighter power outlet for battery tender, tire inflator, etc.

I can speak to one disadvantage of using the Cig plug: I was charging my phone on a RAM windshield mount at the track, and during a hard right-hander the mount flew off and in so doing the cord yanked out the entire horseshoe trim piece into the drivers footwell at 80mph!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does anyone know of a "blank" I can install in the cig. lighter hole and drill out to run a USB cable through? Searching on Amazon or Google hasn't gotten me anything.
I installed a new stereo with Apple CarPlay, removed the factory lighter and installed a USB port into the lighter hole that stopped working after a day or two. One issue is that the stereo has a USB-C type port on it for this and I haven't found any port that will install in place of a cig. lighter that has USB-C. I used a USB-C to USB-A adapter to begin with but I think that is weakening the connection. CarPlay is really picky about the cables it uses.
What I want to try now is to install the factory USB-C cable that came with the stereo and run it to a blank in the cigarette lighter. If I can't do that, I'll need to run it through one of the oval switch blanks and install something else in the lighter hole.
Any ideas?
I installed this ne where my cigarette lighter used to be.
Amazon
Amazon
I’m about to install a cigarette lighter outlet on the side of the console where the carpeted piece is.
I’ve ordered an extra Metropol Blue console carpet piece off eBay and will keep one stock and drill the worst looking one.
That looks like a charger only. I'm looking for data+charger that's compatible with CarPlay. Also, the stereo I installed has a USB C connection which makes it harder. I'm thinking about getting the non-smoker insert, drilling it out and running the stereo cable through that.
I Googled 'USB type C flush mount' (or something similar).
There seems to be a lot of variants on the idea but I didn't see anything that specifically was what your're looking for.
What model stereo did you install? My Kenwood had a regular female USB that I’ve run under dash and connected my IPhone cable to. Strange that it has USB-C
Yeah, mine is a charger only.
But when I was looking there was one available somewhere that had a charging port and a data port.
perhaos you could get a USB C to regular USB adapter.
Cool. I will try googling that. Hopefully it'll get me closer to what I need. I think I used "USB C USB A cigarette lighter" or something like that both in Google and in Amazon.
Thanks! I've found if you need a charger, there are lots of nice options out there (I'd love one like yours that lights up!). I did connect a USB C to A adapter to the back of the stereo connected to the original flush mount. The adapter bent when I put the stereo in.
Ugh. You'd think this would be easy.
Try one of these(or something similar) before the adapter.

Yep, I know how you feel.
You could just drill a small hole in the back of the cubby, run a regular cable through there to the back of the stereo and keep Cig lighter power outlet for battery tender, tire inflator, etc.
That's what I was trying to avoid doing. I was trying to give it a "factory installed" look by converting the cig. lighter to a USB data/charger port. Also, the larger iPhones are too long to fit in the cubby with the cable attached to it. I suspect the bigger Androids are similar. A right angle cable might solve that though.
I've already removed the lighter and also cut away the plastic guard around it on the back of the trim piece. I have the non-smoker lighter replacement in my cart at Pelican. I might pull the trigger on that, admit defeat and drill the goddamn hole in the cubby
yeah, the phone also has a tendency to fly out of the cubby under hard acceleration. But its got to go somewhere. Perhaps a rennline phone magnet mount and it would be a short run to the phone, no worse than a cable from the Cig lighter. Or maybe route it to the console box between the seats? Whatever way, a nice black (or whatever color matches your interior) cable will not stand out as much.
This is wired into my Apline head unit, which gives me some functionality. I also have the Aux in jack in a dummy toggle switch. There is one issue with the cubby location that I neglected to anticipate. Anyone?
maybe this would work?

That's exactly what I had. It didn't work out. I had to use a USB-C to USB-A adapter on the back of the stereo which broke. Unfortunately, the stereo has a USB-C connection on it.
Phone flying out? I can speak to one disadvantage of using the Cig plug: I was charging my phone on a RAM windshield mount at the track, and during a hard right-hander the mount flew off and in so doing the cord yanked out the entire horseshoe trim piece into the drivers footwell at 80mph!
No, the issue I created is that one needs super long fingers to plug into the jack at the bottom of the cubby. I tend to just leave a UBS cable plugged in and coiled in the cubby.
