I've been through most of the electrical connections (coil wires back to X59 plug including all grounds) that I can reach without dropping the engine...In addition, I've checked the ECU and all it's connections.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello guys I have an 03 C2. Have owned it since December 2019. I did an oil change as soon as I got it and did another oil change 6 months later. Car has 106k miles, original ims About 500 miles after the second oil change I was driving on the freeway going around 80 mph when all of a sudden I experience some power loss. I wasnt able to accelerate as much anymore but deceleration felt normal. I kept driving to exit the freeway. Maybe a minute in the dash displays drive car to workshop. I coast the car out of an exit then the engine died and wouldnt start anymore. Towed it home. Oil level was at full capacity. A few days later I installed new spark plugs and coil packs since they were due anyway. The engine starts now but it sounds like a tractor engine. Engine just idles and misfires bad. I didnt let it run for too long maybe just 5 seconds. I also removed and cut open the oil filter to check for any debris but it was clean. So after changing out the spark plugs and coils packs I borrowed a scanner from auto zone. Got engine codes PO300 , PO302,303,306 Cylinder misfires on 2,3, and 6 Any ideas on what to do next? Im not too handy. It took me like 6 hours to do the spark plugs lol any shops in Southern California la/oc area ? thanks.

I had gotten to this part and was ready to respond "Don't try to restart it!" Ohhhhhhh crap. Take it to the Workshop. If you can get the car up to drop the oil pan send us a picture of what you find inside. Godspeed Joe.

POST 3Original post

Did you have codes previously? Is it possible you did not install the packs and plugs correctly?

POST 4Original post

Maybe post a video of starting it up? I can tell a lot by listening to the engine spin before start, I can even hear low compression. I wouldn't worry too much about starting since you already have done that, and had the plugs out (no oil hyrolock I presume). That's exactly what the shop will do when they go to diag, they will check the oil and water, then start it up and listen. Then go from there.. Without having a video of start-up to help diag, I would suggest disconecting the MAF and see how it runs, and test for proper fuel pressure, since you have no codes other than MISFIRE CODES as most failures of sensors and such will cause other codes than just misfire and your misfires codes are not bank specific.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the tips guys. The day the engine died on me I did want to shut it off right away when I felt the engine go bad but I wanted to exit the freeway safely. I hope the engine isnt ruined. I am 99% sure I installed the spark plugs and coil packs correctly. Unfortunately I did not check for codes before changing out the spark plugs and coils. I took a video of it starting up. Then another video of it starting up with the maf disconnected. For whatever reason the engine sounds worse without the maf and died right away. Btw I forgot to mention the engine consumes 1 quart every 1,500 miles which doesnt seem normal to me. Theres never been a drop in my garage floor. I do drive it hard. As hard as any 29 year old would. You Tube You Tube what do you guys think ? Might just have it towed to a shop. Thanks.

POST 6Original post

After I did my spark plug and coils, I also got couple of cylinder misfires, engine running very rough etc... I immediately turned engine off and checked and make sure that all the spark plug wires are fully plugged-in and seated correctly on the coils; not easy to really know for sure because the wire rubber dust-boot is thick and tough, maybe my hand is small and weak too... Anyway after making sure that all connections are good, the engine started and ran fine, with no more misfires. Go back and check those wires on those misfired cylinders, could simply be those bad connections, good-luck. Cheers,

POST 7Original post

This thread has piqued my interest, as I've had this ongoing problem for about 6 weeks now (only get to work on it a few hrs at a time). firingMine runs fine until it reaches operating temp. - 6-10 miles then it starts misfiring - random cylinders but always more than 1. The last instance was 1,2 ,4 & 5 and a 0300 "damaging to cats" code... See here... (last page) https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...misfiring.html

POST 8Original post

I hate to inform you but you have some internal issue going on. Time to turn it over to a professional for a compression test/leakdown test to verify which cylinder, then a borescope to check for visual internal damage. Sounds like a possible broken valve spring or valve seat..

"Originally Posted by 808Bill View Post Who's this meant for, OP or dporto? OP" Phwew... ! Not to hijack this thread, but since we're here... Yeah, Jake's pretty confident that my problem isn't mechanical (though he says it's a remote possibility that it's the flywheel - There are no other symptoms of a shot flywheel though...). I've been through most of the electrical connections (coil wires back to X59 plug including all grounds) that I can reach without dropping the engine...In addition, I've checked the ECU and all it's connections. All the connections and wires are clean - no chafing, rodent damage etc... Quite the mystery...

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So like Im assuming my engine is toast. I want to keep this car long term. Is buying a Jake Raby engine the only true long term option or are there other routes ? Thanks.

Id contact Sublime in Silverlake. Talk to Ares, explain your issue. Im sure he can help.

POST 15Original post

It may be you catalytic converts starting to go out. It my be telling your engine to either run rich or lean. What did your spark plugs look like when you pulled them out? I've heard that sometimes the baffles can collapse. Try banging on the converter. If it rattles , then its probably your converters. Just a thought

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 16809747

Whoa... say it ain't so Joe! First, you may or may not have catastrophic engine damage - the fact that you said the oil was clean is good. Obviously, there are many other things (some not so bad, some really bad) that can make your engine run poorly. The key to figuring out the best course of action is to troubleshoot in a linear fashion, starting with the simplest and most plausible problems (Coils, plugs, wiring, injectors etc...). Try to be systematic and not emotional (emotional can get very expensive very quickly...). Good luck PS - No buying an FSI/Jake Raby engine isn't the only way to go (but it is a good one).

POST 17Original post

Hate to say it guys but after you tried all the normal culprits (coils, plugs, fuel) and its a 996.2 then I would suggest it could be lifters, Porsche changed the part # vs from the original manufactured specs. I have owned 2 996.2's and when reviewing their full service history by previous owners both suffered misfires that were rectified by replacing lifters. My story here : My misfire thread
