One of the many things you could do to any 996 is replace the OEM engine mounts with semi-solid mounts to tighten things up.

Like zbomb says, buy the shell with a solid motor, change the rest to suit.

Provided you can find the cars in question in lots that will grant an extensive test drive you can then decide for yourself how important that feature is.

The first 996 I test drove was a '99 and can't say I felt a preference of one over the other when test driving my '00.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had ever gen of Carrera from 964 till 991 except a 996 (learned to drive stick on my fathers 99 cab).
My 964 & 993 were 2 of my favorites and I like the older feel of a raw car. Which leads me to this pickle.
i found a couple nice 2000 aerokit cars which I love. But the idea of the 1999 being throttle cable seems like it has that edge in terms of feel. But the 1999 cars Ive found are plain janes (for me I need some aerokit bumper & side skirts to really love the look) or I find colors I dont love or grey interior 😂. Found a blue/grey 99 with LSD thats clean.
Is it go with the 2000 aerokit... or 1999 non aerokit but has throttle cable & potential lsd
99 aerokit W/ lsd would be ideal...
input appreciated.
I have a 99 with the cable throttle, and I like it, but is the cable really that big of a deal? Ive driven other 996s and havent noticed any lack of rawness or direct feel. If anything, the mkii car feels a bit more powerful due to the additional torque.
I havent driven a 2000 or after car. But from some others Ive heard so. Every little bit of modernization sort of removes us from the experience. And to me the more it feels connected the better. But most will say throttle cable go pedals have more feel/feedback. And yes hear .2 is more powerful but power isnt what Im looking for. Hear they feel more refined which is exactly what I dont want.
Easy to unrefine a .2, I did. buckets, seat deletes, coilovers, quick release steering wheel, if an interior piece offended me with its age or materials, I removed it. To the tune of under 3K lbs.
I guess what level of refinement you're looking for is important.
The easiest way to work that out is to go drive a 996 with the cable and one with e-gas. Provided you can find the cars in question in lots that will grant an extensive test drive you can then decide for yourself how important that feature is. Looking for a cable car limits your hunt. If it turns out its not that big a deal for ya, youll have a lot more cars to choose from.
MkI has beautiful aero kit. LSD yes. Cable throttle meh. Take out the back seats, put in some buckets, pull out the spare and use some 5 spoke Carrera II wheels, put some lighter brakes on. Your curb weight will be close to 2800#. Like zbomb says, buy the shell with a solid motor, change the rest to suit.
Or buy a Mk I GT3.
The electronic throttle on .2 cars doesn't feel artificial in the least bit.
One of the many things you could do to any 996 is replace the OEM engine mounts with semi-solid mounts to tighten things up. If you're after a raw feeling, this alone could help a .2 give you that. The added NVH could be a desirable trait.
Just about the only thing I come close to disliking about my '00 cab is the eGas.
It is slightly artificial feeling and has a bit of a mind of its own. You have to think about what you are doing to avoid periodically bogging down on start-off from a standstill. The computer nanny isn't always perfectly consistent.
I've driven a couple of '99s and I think they do have a better (as in, like an old 911) throttle feel. On the other hand, I am all about driving engagement, and the throttle is part of the stuff I have to think about to attempt to achieve a perfect drive, so I am cool with it. Perverse, I know...
That said, if LSD was part of the package, I would definitely go for the '99; BUT, I am not an Aerokit fan. You have to weigh the value of the Aerokit to you, which is a subjective call.
I would prioritize in this order:
LSD
Aerokit
'99 with throttle cable
I lucked out and found one local to me with all three, but it's also the only 996 I've ever driven, so I don't have any baseline to compare to.
The combo of all three is difficult to find, in my experience.
I haven't driven anything other than my 2000 C4 Cab and I don't feel any hesitation or impairment in the throttle. When I want to go 100+, it goes 100+ like a bat outta hell.
It's not a drag car so and clutch jobs on this car are EXPENSIVE, so I'm not hard/fast off the line w/it -- EVER -- but once it gets going it's fine. As for aerokits, they're not my thing. I like the car the way it was made to look from the factory and I don't drift (on purpose) so an LSD is of little use to me.
I'm glad you said this; I was thinking it was just me or my car. I've been in dual-clutch cars for nearly a decade, so I thought I was rusty. My old VWs (Jetta VR6s) and Mitsubishi (3000GT VR4) were easier to get rolling from a stop.
I was just driving with my friend today. He picked up a 2012 Shelby GT500 last night. I noticed he shifts into 2nd sooner than I do. I think these 996s have relatively tall gearing. We can, after all, hit 107 (indicated) in 3rd gear (104 actual). So 1st gear isnt just for getting started, its a gear meant to be used to drive in.
Aerokit is how it was made to look from the factory, it even has it's own option code. LSD is also not drift related but more equal distribution to the rear wheels. Difference can be marginal, on the track will be more prominent, however on a street hardly noticeable.
In regards to pedal feel on a '99 to '00+ you have really look (okay feel) for it. There's a slight difference. The first 996 I test drove was a '99 and can't say I felt a preference of one over the other when test driving my '00.
Really just depends on end goal like any car. For a typical street use, LSD/throttle cable, with or without, won't make much difference. To me the biggest factors were colors, 6MT, lower mileage, and factory aero.
This. The 3.6 makes up for eGas. Btw, there's a slew of issues on the 3.4 that are far less easy to avoid than just IMS. That alone swayed me away from considering a 996.1. The cracked heads issue seems to be a lot more common and unavoidable... and gaining momentum as these cars surpass the 20 year mark.
If you want a factory LSD, you are limited to the 99 C2 or the 04 Anniversary Edition. Or a GT variant.
At this point, I would pay more attention to overall condition and history and not how the throttle is actuated.
I found this thread recently, which has some tidbits on why an early MY99 build (1998, as early as possible in that year) is preferable:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...earlier-4.html
As I contemplate getting another 996, I'm going to be on the hunt for an early build.
Same here! I've driven manual transmissions all my life and have had my '99 for almost 14 years, but it's still a little cantankerous starting off in first occasionally. Just thought it was me!
Its physics, there is not enough torque on the low end of the 3.4l. U need to be heavy on the gas ti get through it. My cummins truck will pull its 8k lbs out of 3rd gear from a stop. Try driving the 996 after getting ouy of that animal
.
Wait for this car. Time is on your side, patience is a virtue, blah blah blah. You've played with some pretty nice Porsches and the one in your Avatar looks like it will scratch your old school itch while you wait. There are so many 996's out there, don't rush into the wrong one because it's for sale. Not like anyone quotes Game of Thrones anymore but "Winter is Coming!"

Threads like this make me consider selling. But then I realize that I just enjoy the car too much at the moment. No doubt that every man and woman has their price though.
I also agree with the 1st gear start assessments.
‘02 C4S here. At first I thought I had to rev engine to have a 1st gear start without stall. I probably put some wear on the clutch before realizing it has enough torque that on a flat surface, I can release clutch with no throttle. I try to launch right around 1000 rpm, to avoid unnecessary wear.
To me, seems to be geared low. On B roads, I spend most of the time in 2,3,4. Better to be a little low than too high like a lot of people say GT4 is.
I did. Also made it seem factory aerokit almost but was added later which is fine then...
Well I valued one thing highly if I found it. SLICKTOP w/ Aero. So...bought this.
Factory Aerokit
Slicktop (Sunroof Delete) Rare as hell
Sport Seats w/ Leather Backs
grey interior is pretty mehhh but cant get everything you want.
Hey if you don't love the grey sports seats, let me know, and I'll trade you a set of black
Looks like a great car! If you're feeling it's too grey, throw in black mats and black HVAC surrounds, etc. That's what I did, and I think it looks great. Want some pics?

Nice find! More details and photos needed.
CarGurus tells me a 2000 with a sunroof delete that I was watching just sold. Did you grab this car?
