Dundon just swapped two 991 gt3 powertrains into 996 cars.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 2001 996 just died at exactly 220,000 miles. It needs a new engine. I really want to my 996 to have a Porsche engine with more power. My question is has anyone had experience putting a later model engine in a 996.1? I found a 991.1 GTS engine with low miles, it is less expensive than a rebuild and it would also be nice to have 450HP. It seams like it should be doable, people do LS swaps but I don't see anyone doing Porsche to Porsche swaps.

has a beast of a Mk.1 996 that has had a 3.8l M97 engine transplant that Dundon Motorsports did for him in Washington. It was a bit of work to get everything to play nice but they got it to work well. Maybe reach out to Dundon for a quote. Can't say how cost effective it is to do vs. a rebuild of your current M96. I would imagine if you already own all of the parts for your swap, engine, headers, exhaust, etc., it could be a less expensive option as you're paying primarily straight labor.
Yes, That is correct. Dundon di swap a 997.1 engine into my 996.1. Alot of stuff had to be changed...ABS, Instrument cluster, HVAC controller and a bunch of other things as well. Gave me an extra 100HP with the Dundon custom exhaust. Anyone that drives the car is inspired and want to do a similar build. I am super pleased but it did cost a bit. Here is a bit of more relevant stuff for you. THe 3.8 engine that was put in my car came ot of a boxster that Dundon had built so I got a good deal. But what I think you car about is that they put in 991.2 GT3 crate engine into the 986 boxster. This work was done by Dundon as well and the car is incredible. SO the answer to your question is that if a 991 engine can be put in a 986, it should definitely be done for a 996. I would reach out to Charles Dundon to ask him what needs to be done. He is brilliant and on top of that the nicest guy. Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide.
I would like to buy a 997 GT3 from copart with crash damage and swap drivetrain and electronics and sell everything else to recoup as much cash as possible.
Its a nice dream !
OP - You might want to look into also needing to change out transmission (bellhousing), transaxles (different dimensions), ECU and complete harness, water lines, etc. Quite a generational leap for matching it all up. So $40,000 later you could’ve had a 996 Turbo...
a lot sooner and for not much additional coin (italics added to edit for emphasis).
Its true about Dundon. I live locally and reached out to Charles last week to schedule some work on my new-to-me 996 turbo. Charles indicates they needed to focus on the engineering efforts for the aftermarket parts and couldnt continue with their service. Sad to lose a great service provided but excited about the new parts they are working on!
Yes I think either way its a 40k project. Ill look for a Copart car for the main parts. I havent seen a Manual Turbo for 40k lately but maybe they are out there.
They are out there.
FB has a few 996 groups and one comes up for sale every month. I even see them on CL here in Hawaii.
If you sell your roller let me know as I have a motor that needs a home.
Byprodriver has a rebuilt .1 m96 motor for sale too.
GT3 engines don't work (Mezger engine has a different bolt pattern)
991 engines don't work (they're DFI, your car is EFI)
Best best is a 997.1 engine or a 996 or 987 engine rebuilt to what you want
Done A LOT of research on this for my race car. PM if you want to discuss more
PS: when I say it doesn't work... everything works if you throw enough money at it. I mean it's not plug and play
I think this is the route I want to take, I currently have a 991.1 C2S and a 992 Turbo S being delivered in January. I would like a track car that I can drive a lot. I don't want an engine I have to baby. Ill PM you.
I was at Dundon yesterday to pick up my 996. They had only one other customer vehicle in for service while the remainder of the vehicles there were for race-prep and/or product development. They are definitely moving in that direction. It is a bit frustrating for those of us that have experience with their service and workmanship. I'm still hoping/praying I'll be able to squeeze my 996 in for some work from time to time.

Dundon just swapped two 991 gt3 powertrains into 996 cars. Swapping motors into the 996 is a lot easier than people think. This is probably due to the lack of technology inside the car. I’m in the process of swapping a 997.1 3.8 into my 99. Charles gave me
the rundown on what to do/change to get it to work. I would suggest getting a wiring diagram of both cars you’re using to help you out.
