Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Only the "wearable" parts have been replaced, like bearing, rings, etc.
Leading evidence: 'Replace only the "wearable" parts' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair of these motors' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Are you offering any type of training on the rebuild/repair of these motors?

And can the cracked cylinder head be replaced, cheaper than paying for a rebuilt engine?

In the article it said that they're working with softronic to develop a universal piece that can replace single and double row without disassembly.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm not sure if registration is required to view this, but those interested in seeing the disassembly of a M96 might find these photos and descriptions interesting:

i really like this:
996 Double Row:
Engine Number up to 661 14164
996 Single Row:
Engine Number from 661 14165
it let's me check to see whether or not i have single or double row IMS for when/if i decide to go with the LN engineering IMS bearing replacement.
Scary stuff, so it was a lack of oil that killed that engine? And can the cracked cylinder head be replaced, cheaper than paying for a rebuilt engine? Seems extremely labor intensive!
A 3.4 with 2 year warranty is $13,521.30 with a core charge of $2,291.07 for a net of $11,230.23. That was the Suncoast price last month, although Sonnen has one on Ebay now for a net of $9,995.00 after the same core charge (pickup only, no shipping).
I'm sure you can rebuild one for significantly less than that assuming you don't start replacing a lot of big parts (heads, crank, bearing assembly, case, etc.) but you won't have any warranty with that one.
Don, The broken parts are actually the most important pieces that came from the engine... I greatly value broken components as we learn more from them, than anything else.. Plus, I just like carnage!
LN Engineering and my company are working to make another hybrid ceramic bearing like the unit that we have for the single row IMS, for the dual row. This can be installed without engine disassembly as well and ultimately I'll do a DVD on the topic and offer the tools for rental, etc, etc..
There are complications with the procedures that are being worked out as we speak and the first hybrid ceramic bearings will be here for testing in a few days.
Jake,
Are you offering any type of training on the rebuild/repair of these motors? My son is a very good factory trained Audi tech that is looking to learn more about the "newer" Porsche motors and I keep encouraging him to find a teacher like yourself. Besides since I have one of these beasts in my race car it would be great to have him around to fix it for me!!!
Tim
PS,
Keep up the good work, Im sure there will be alot of us that will benifit from what you've learned.
Great link Doug. Now I know what I am in for in taking apart my engine, although I am hoping to just remove the head(s) and find a crack in one. Lots of detailed info and pictures. How is your project coming? Did you decide on a DIY rebuild or buying an engine?
Hadn't seen that, but that's like Wayne true to form posting up a huge documented project.
Did that article determine what the cause of the oil starvation was? Or is that still tbd?
I think I'm going to do another oil change very soon just to be safe.
Tim,
Yes we are now offering the training. Our first round of classes will begin in June and we are working on the curriculum now.
I have a documented engine assembly to post on my site soon and will have a DVD of an engine tear down soon. All the pieces are in place now for the education program to grow quickly.
Difficulty of 1 to 4 with one being putting air in the tires and 4 for engine disassembly? The learning curve must be as steep as climbing Everest.
I think I am a 0.5.
I'll post data on our site soon about the training program.. I'll have several classes put together for this summer.
Also, watch for a comprehensive step by step assembly of an M96 on our site in the next couple of weeks.. The engine was one of our 2.9s built from a 2.5 Boxster, but other than the size of the parts there are few differences in the engines.
I think a reliable rebuild is very tough to do for less than that price... for example... if you've scored your cylinder #6 like I did and broken the bearings on your crank... well... that's big $$$ for new parts... and a new block... and your still re-assembling with old parts.... and those can fail... so is it worth a re-build... hmmm probably not... cause of "no warranty"
the 2 year warrantied re-man from porsche is the safest and most hassle free route you can go... I wish they would do something about the pricing though...
the only thing about the 3.4 is you can't prevent high-g oil starvation on cylinder #6 !!! you need to add the x-51 oiling kit and that's no small change... probably like $3K parts and labour...
It really makes me wonder what the BEST oil is to use for a tracker... is it 5W50 from mobil 1 or something from Motul which is a more advanced synthetic... if you can't stop oil starvation you can at lease use a high quality oil that has a good film strength for those high-g moments to reduce the damage?
Remember that a Remanufactured 3.4 is using may old parts. Only the "wearable" parts have been replaced, like bearing, rings, etc. Cases, pistons, rods. etc. are from a used engine, only replaced if damaged. And you hear stories about welded blocks and heads in reman engines, so how big is the difference? There are many shops now rebuilding M96 engines, and most are far less than the Porsche source. Also, I think that Porsche hold the core deposit until the core is returned and inspected, so if it has major damage you might not get the whole deposit back. Of course this would mean that Porsche would have to actually say what the damage was.
right but porsche gives you a 2 year warranty... so if your doing lots of DE events where you really push the car you have 2 years of worry free driving...
rebuilders give you at most a 1 year warranty... and then you still may run into snags with their warranty...
porsche screwed up bigtime with the 996 engines... their prices for remans should be half of what they are selling for if they are to be held accountable...
