Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I just replaced my starter after similar fact pattern. All good now.
Leading evidence: 'Replace starter' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace starter' (1 discussions). For that action, 1 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. The most frequently reported fix is 'Replace starter', supported by resolution reports in 1 discussions. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Odd one here. My 2001 C4-Tip runs great. But about one in ten times it will not start on the first crank, but always does (so far!) on the second.
Any ideas? Heres what happens. First start of the day: Always cranks and starts no problem. Drive around and turn engine off. Come back to car, insert key. Lights all come on. Battery shows maybe 12V. Turn key: I get maybe half a crack or less. sometimes zero crank. Lights on dash stay on. Take key out, wait a second, reinsert key. Lights come on. Turn key - starts fine. Its done this maybe 20 times and always starts on the second crank. Driving around battery reads 13.5-14V.
Could it be a bad battery? I dont see why first crank would fail but second starts every time.
Perhaps the switch at the clutch pedal is going bad, or you're not depressing the clutch pedal deeply enough. I do this on occasion, go to start car, turn key with clutch depressed and get nothing, then remind myself to depress clutch pedal deeply and, voila, car starts. For me its a function of short legs, need to move drivers seat up a notch or two!
It's a tip. So when it doesn't crank, maybe try to "jiggle" the shifter. I believe there is a microswitch within the shifter that tells the car not to start when the shifter is not in Park or Neutral. Second culprit - the ignition switch. Sounds like you have good voltage, so not a battery problem. Third culprit - starter motor. It could be going out and it takes two hits on it to work.
I know this sounds too simple to be the problem, but it could be high resistance in the battery post connections. Take both battery terminals off and take a close look at the post and inside of terminals for signs of "pitting" (burning). If you see any" pits" take an upclose picture and post it here for others and clean the posts and inside terminals well with sandpaper or suitable tool(there are special tools for this)..
I could go into detailed technical ramblings about why it follows this particular pattern, but most people will be ok just to know that it does.
To put it simply, bad battery connections = intermittent starts. Let us know if that's your problem..
