Note: my engine ran exactly the same at 62,000 miles on original coils and plugs as it did after I replaced them all.
Leading evidence: 'Replace ignition coils' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend intervals' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When I changed my plugs, it was on jack stands, wheels and mufflers removes.

I got some SS studs longer than the original bolts (instead of the heat shield bolts) and used some nuts on those as spacers.

Many say its the same as Mobil PTX 75-90, and others might tell you to use a different brand, but I stick with Porsche brand and dont have any issues with shifting or the transmission.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey 996ers. Loaded question here. Im considering changing the plugs and coils on my 99 C2. I have ramps and dont have the means to take the wheels off. How many four letter words are going to be coming out of my mouth for this job? Is it just worth having my Indy do it? Thanks for the input. Shes got 102k on her now. Ill have to go through all the records to see when the plugs were last changed.
On my 996.2 I changed mine without taking the wheels off, though I did remove the rear bumper and mufflers. Doing that made access MUCH easier. I know it can be done without doing so, but I can't imagine not removing them at this point.
I just did this a couple of months ago. Took the wheels and bumper off. Didn't have to do the bumper, but I just bought the car in January so I was curious what it looked like.
Got the new updated coil packs which are thicker. Which means you need longer bolts. The plugs and coil packs towards the back of the car are the hardest.
Porsche is using e-torx, or external torx, bolts in the new longer bolts. I bought a set of those tools. However, in trying to get the two packs on towards the back of the car I realized it would be far easier to use regular bolts. Went to NAPA and bought standard head grade 8 bolts. Made it so much easier!
I was able to use a ratcheting box wrench to put the NAPA standard bolts on. This type of wrench lays flat in that tight space. The e-torx needs a socket and socket wrench. Even with a pivoting one like Raby uses and recommends it's still a challenge. I questioned making them all standard head bolts, but was most of the way through the job.
I have no experience with this job other than this one time. If I would have to leave the tires on I would want to take the mufflers out. I think it would be a real challenge with both tires and mufflers in.
I wish you the best,
I just looked at records the previous owner gave me. Plugs and coils were done at 86k and I have 102k on it now. What are the recommended intervals? Also, any recommendations on when to flush trans fluid? Its the 6 spd manual. I apologize in advance if I am asking ignorant questions. Still very new to the Porsche world.
Recommended mileage for plugs is 30K so you should be fine unless it's been ages. I don't recall a time interval. Coils should be fine if they were done at 86K. I replaced mine because there was no evidence they were ever done after 21 years and over 30K miles. I did a detailed writeup about it here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-detailed.html
I took the wheels off but left the bumper and mufflers on. I've read that experienced mechanics leave the wheels on but they're not lying on their back either.
It sounds like you won't need to do yours for a little bit though. By then hopefully you'll have jackstands too.
I've done it a few times, no need to remove the rear bumper, I do remove the rear tires and remove the mufflers thru the tire opening without removing the exhaust tips by removing the three nuts on the muffler bracket.and union between the cats and mufflers
Lucky, I dont think you need to do either. Note: my engine ran exactly the same at 62,000 miles on original coils and plugs as it did after I replaced them all. The plugs were still in good shape.
As for trans fluid, if you have no evidence its been done, I would do it. If you have an LSD, make sure to use the correct fluid. I used the Porsche brand, which isnt cheap. Many say its the same as Mobil PTX 75-90, and others might tell you to use a different brand, but I stick with Porsche brand and dont have any issues with shifting or the transmission.
I've done my plugs three times and third time I also put in the new upgraded coil packs. In my opinion, this would be an extremely difficult job with the car on ramps and the rear wheels not being removed. I have not removed the rear bumper, rear heat shields or mufflers, but, you will find yourself contorted in many ways that make this a real PITA job with the rear wheels on. Especially if you still have the old style coil pack bolts. Also, if you have the newer coil packs with the newer type bolts, you will have to be creative because you will need to put spacers on the coil pack heat shields to clear the newer type coil pack bolts. I got some SS studs longer than the original bolts (instead of the heat shield bolts) and used some nuts on those as spacers. I believe I measured 5mm of additional space will work, but you also need to account for the stud insertion in the block. Sorry, never took a pic of the setup.
Recommended change interval is 30k Miles for MK-I and 60k Miles for MK-II. I don't know why anyone would want to change them with the wheels on. jack stands are not expensive and you could probably borrow them from someone.
Having done the job twice, wheels and mufflers off is the way to go.
When I changed my plugs, it was on jack stands, wheels and mufflers removes. Id say youd want to have some extensions and a univerisal joint for you sockets as well.
it was pretty straight forward, just involved a lot of lying under the car and getting up.
Buying standard hex bolts is fine for DIY. (Very cheap solution)
But for professionals, or if you want to stick with Porsche fasteners, you'll want these for e-torx in tight spaces where stubby e-torx sockets are still tight:

There are cheaper non-ratcheting e-torx wrenches too:
I have both.

LOL best thing I ever did was buy the scissor lift from Harbor Freight and also built a 24 inch hi creeper that allow my old bones to get up and down very easy. LOL I have fun working on my car now along with the boy C2 also.
