Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok. I should probably work on my car when I'm not so tired. I was removing my coilovers to do some maintenance and I accidentally popped the axle out from the front diff (C4s) while i was pulling on the struts. I did not remove the hex bolts so the whole assembly just came out. I tried guiding it back into the diff but it was unable to get it back in. Is the axle supposed to just pop back in as long as things are lined up? Or am I looking at a scenario where it'd be easier to just remove the whole axle assembly from the hub and get it aligned that way? S2P5jAx.jpg

POST 2Original post

Once the splines engage, it should just pop back in, with some force. There is a expanding C clip on the end of the hub.

POST 3Original post

What he said. You will have to "make a run at it" to get the snap ring to place.

Thanks for the help guys. For future screwups like me, the easiest way to get the axle back into the diff would be to remove the 6 hex bolts and separate the outer axle from the portion that goes into the diff. I had someone step on the brakes while i removed each bolt. Just rotate the rotor around to gain access to each bolt. Align the diff side to the diff and tap it into place. I used a piece of wood and rubber mallet. It shouldn't require too much force if you have things aligned correctly. Now, just reattach the outer and inner axle pieces with the hex bolts. If I just removed the 6 hex bolts in the beginning, this wouldn't have happened. Don't be lazy, kids.
