Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used a large black garbage bag with a small hole to stretch it over the caliper
Leading evidence: 'Use large black garbage bag' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean surface of the caliper' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Apply a very minimal coat of black caliper paint to even out the color - used a small brush to touch up the bleed valve

I think it's from running aggressive pads all the time, and doing lots of autocross/track, and then cleaning the wheels all the time.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My calipers were looking rough - not sure if a previous owner was sloppy with fluid, but the paint was in relatively bad shape.
The first picture shows the "before" view. As you can see the PORSCHE wording is almost completely gone, plus the bleed valve on top was missing most of the paint and looked "rusty".
I decided to cosmetically clean it up by:
Mask the caliper carefully (only get the paint where I have to). I used a large black garbage bag with a small hole to stretch it over the caliper
Clean the surface of the caliper with brake cleaner
Apply a very minimal coat of black caliper paint to even out the color - used a small brush to touch up the bleed valve
Once the black was dry to the touch - I applied PORSCHE decals (sourced from ebay)
Followed up with two coats of clear caliper paint
You can see the "in process" and "after" photos below. I'll post a follow up based on longevity of the finish, decal, etc...
Before - notice the tired paint and ugly bleed valve.
During - all masked up and ready for paint.
During - black paint & decal applied.
Complete - finished product looks good.
You do know that the "ugly bleed" valve is suppose to be unpainted and do rust. Just don't try bleeding your brakes or you will have to paint them again. It's better to take steel wool or dremel with wirebrush attachment to shine them up if you're that OCD.
Good job either way.
Just looking ahead, but is there a good source for the correct Porsche caliper aerosol paint. Some previous owner painted the calipers, but the red is just a shade or two off. Call me **** - which I proudly share with many of you guys!
Pete - you've got yourself deal. Appreciate the invitation to help with my brakes - can't pass up an opportunity to get this thing up on lift and take a look around. I'll probably learn a thing or two!
I'll PM you over the next few weeks to set something up.
Strange that the calipers were that worn to begin with? i mean its awful difficult for them to get that beat up,maybe the previous owner did a poor job of restoring them at one time (wrong paint.bad decal application,no clear coat) ive never seen the porsche logo completely wear off, anyway doing it right the first time will pay off in the long run.
Nice work and looks nice!
When I painted the calipers on my Boxster, I took them off, masked the areas that didn't need to be painted, hung them in the garage and spray painted them. Applied decal and clear-coated them.
I appreciate the documentation of the process!
I have very faded red calipers. Does anyone have a perfect color matching red paint they can recommend?
TIA
maybe someone knows the diameters of 996 brake caliper pistons, both rear and front.
wan't to redo the calipers and am looking what dust boots do I recquire
my calipers were also faded and thought of having them painted. my mechanic suggested having them powder coated instead - more durable and longer lasting than paint.
after having them done, i can't stop looking at them and cleaning them lol
they came out great! i'll see if i can post a pic for thoughts and feedback
Looks great, nice work. I bought the decals off of EBay too and will probably be applying them when I do my rim refinish project to include coating the rotor hats... It's always something! R.
My "PORSCHE" paint dissolved away over the last few years. I think it's from running aggressive pads all the time, and doing lots of autocross/track, and then cleaning the wheels all the time. If you were going to all the trouble to paint the caliper, why didn't you at least unbolt it from the car?
Let me know how that decal lasts...I am pretty confident I could liquify it in a day if I tried.
No, this is high temp vinyl. Only if you track it and are always on the brakes will it start coming off, but by then your calipers will also discolor as well. I was skeptical too at first but it's been over a few years already and my decals look the same as the first day.
Any factory porsche or brembo caliper driven hard enough with the right brake compound can discolor, but by then you'll have other things to worry about like dust shields.
I can't confirm if factory uses high temp vinyl or not.
