I had one leaking a little and replaced all 4 while I had the engine out.

After all they recommended I buy the car, even with the few issues.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone! This is my first post ( to the right forum) as I just purchased my first Porsche 996 a couple weeks ago. I had a PPI performed by Midwest Performance in Chicago and they had a few items they discovered. After all they recommended I buy the car, even with the few issues.
It's a midnight blue metallic 1999 C2 with 30k miles, LSD, Aero kit and big reds. I'll get a photo uploaded shortly. Needless to say THIS CAR KICKS ***! My wife is trying to pry me and my son away from it. I already caught my son sitting in the back seat in his pajamas the other morning. Proud moment.
Down to business. One item listed was the left valve cover cam adjust solenoid. Picture below. The oil seal is leaking and they mentioned a "seal kit." It's also listed as a 5 hour job. Seems a little overboard.
I did order this guy from Pelican:

Being I do not have a lift and will rely on jacking it up in my garage is this something I should approach or pay a mechanic. I am very handy and have a full auto tool chest from past years of racing and destroying cars.
However, I am a complete noob to Porsche and this damn engine couldn't be crammed in there any tighter! Your advice is much appreciated.
Looks to me that you are on the right track and have ordered the correct part. Don't be afraid to delve into this simple repair. Every time you work on your car and make repairs you will remove some of the mystery surrounding these great engines and cars. DIY repairs are a great way to get to know your car better. Let us know how it goes!
You have to be sure the leak is from the solenoid.
While a leak from the solenoid is not unknown, there are other leak sources that are as common maybe more so. Camshaft cover and spark plug tubes come to mind.
For help with the solenoid R&R, if this proves to be the right thing to do, my advice would be to search out any articles on a solenoid R&R. There have been a few posts on this with some good info. You might find an article on this job at the Pelican Parts web site, too.
In the past whenever I tackled a job like this for the first time I liked to load up on as much info as I could get my hands on so I had a pretty good feel for what I was in for and I could avoid any wrong turns.
I had one leaking a little and replaced all 4 while I had the engine out. Your lucky you only have 2. I cleaned all 4 solenoids real well and lubed the seals before I installed them. IIRC the wires on the 3.6 unplug at the solenoid but I see yours are different on the 3.4.
Thanks everyone, job is done, cleaned up area with mineral spirits and haven't noticed any new oil leaking in a few days. For full coverage on how to replace the solenoid seal go here.
