Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'sunroof' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'sunroof' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check thump problem' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

* Mufflers (I installed a set of Fisters about 6 months ago, so I will ensure that nothing has worked loose and is now sliding back and forth under acceleration)

If my car had a trunk, I would check the trunk to see if there was a full wine bottle smacking into the back of the trunk when I accelerate - that's the best way I can describe the sensation.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I managed to time the development of a small 996 issue with my temporary "vacation" - awesome.
Anyway, when I take off from a light at any speed faster than "elderly" - just a normal, quickish acceleration, certainly not dumping the clutch or anything stupid - I hear a single clunk/thump from the back of the car. If my car had a trunk, I would check the trunk to see if there was a full wine bottle smacking into the back of the trunk when I accelerate - that's the best way I can describe the sensation.
I have not yet had a chance to put the car up and take a look. Currently on the lsit of things I plan to check for wear/tightness:
* Sway bar
* Transmission mount
* Motor mounts (although I have relatively new WEVO semi-solid mounts, I'll still check them out)
* Mufflers (I installed a set of Fisters about 6 months ago, so I will ensure that nothing has worked loose and is now sliding back and forth under acceleration)
Anything else you all think I should eyeball while I'm under the car?
Thanks!
Welcome back! Some of us have missed your wit and humor even though many won't admit it. I have nothing to add to check for your thump problem. My guess is you will find it when you get it up in the air.
Engine/transmission mounts have to be on the list of things to consider, that's for sure.
Loose suspension hardware, too.
Is the clutch action smooth when you take off? I'm thinking the clunk could come from a DMF problem but my info is when this goes bad there can be a clunk just taking off or if not a clunk the clutch take up is not smooth.
Yes, the shift is complete before this happens. There is no sensation in the clutch pedal nor the shifter, so right now the clutch/flywheel are not on my list of suspects.
Thanks for the suggestions.
If the suspension checks out ok.
It might be your dual mass flywheel is on the way out .
Hard to guess from here with hearing it .
But when the flywheel goes it tends to shift fine but clunk as it spools up
Schnell - On a serious note, what kind of wine does it sound like? A red or a white? Have you been hanging out with the Lexus crowd so that is could possibly be (God forbid ) a rose'? Or the Boxste' crowd and it could be a 4 pack of Bartles and Jaymes?
Based on your descriptions and the comments of others, I would go with DMF as well. However sounds in the coupe can be very deceptive. I was getting a "thunk" in my 997 when I went over road strips as certain speeds. Sounded like it was coming from the right rear of the car. Took three different people for rides in the car and they all thought it was something in the right rear suspension. Turned out to be the sunroof.
Update: I am a lousy DIYer. Bruised a rib playing with Pee Pee Eye on Saturday (thought it was busted, was delighted when it wasn't); was too much of a pansy to push through the pain and work on the car Sunday afternoon. Instead, I pushed through the cooler full of microbrew at my brother's house, then drank his wine and finally killed off a bottle of champagne. At this point I was in NO pain, but still in sufficient control of my faculties to know that working under the car while bombed was probably not the best way to round out a weekend.
The car still thumps, but I cared a lot less about it.
Well, it was a heavy thunk, so it might have been a sparking wine - those bottles are a little more robust so they don't explode.
I suppose it might also be described as the sound a magnum bottle would make. If it was a bottle this size, I'm assuming the wine itself would have been something light - a riesling, perhaps, or maybe a Gewrztraminer.
